Chinese Grand Prix 2025: preview

Kimi Antonelli aside, the rookies and new faces struggled badly at the season-opener, so the first Sprint event of the year couldn't have come at a more inopportune time. The drivers only get one practice session to get to grips with the conditions at Shanghai International Circuit – after that, they're racing.

Lando Norris topped the podium in Melbourne ahead of Max Verstappen and George Russell, but were it not for a late error, Oscar Piastri might have challenged his teammate for the win. Both McLaren men went wide in the final sector, but it was only the Aussie that got stuck in the wet grass.

The honeymoon is already over for Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari after a fraught and anticlimactic first act. The seven-time champion finished 10th, two places behind Charles Leclerc, and he hasn't exactly played down his disappointment, pointedly saying this week that the idea of quitting at this stage of the season is not playing on his mind.
