The full-colour, touch-sensitive system can provide an enhanced electronic programme guide, complete with pictures, slideshows of station logos, artist pictures or advertising, and even real-time traffic information with pictures from CCTV cameras.
It will also allow users to tag and store information on products, allowing interactive advertising, or save details of favourite music tracks for later purchase.
The Touch Radio system, or 'Advanced DAB', is said by Frontier Silicon boss Anthony Sethill to be "the next step in digital radio platforms and visual experience.
"The technology and enhanced user functionality is just as big a leap as that from analogue to digital radio, if not bigger, and allows us to truly map out the future of DAB radio.”
