If you want to delve into the world of hi-fi but don’t know where to start, allow us to offer a helping hand. Danish brand Dynaudio has been at the forefront of cutting edge hi-fi for 45 years, earning rave reviews across the AV press for decades. But with its new Emit range, it’s making audiophile-grade hi-fi more accessible than ever.
Hi-fi at a low price
The beauty of the brand’s Emit speakers is that you don’t need to know your ohms from your amperes, you can just hook them up and start enjoying high quality audio. It’s hi-fi for the rest of us, with a price tag to match.
But if you think that means corners have been cut, think again.
Each speaker in the Emit range features technology trickled down from the firm’s high-end models, giving them true bona fide hi-fi pedigree. For high frequencies, they all use the same coated fabric soft-dome Cerotar tweeters used in Dynaudio’s five-star Evoke range. These have better controlled resonances than most other dome tweeters, which preserves a high level of detail in the music and means less listening fatigue. This is down to the unique coating, which uses Dynaudio’s own recipe that has been refined and perfected over many years of testing – the only place it’s available is in Skanderborg, site of Danish brand Dynaudio’s HQ. And these tweeters in turn derive their technology from Dynaudio’s best-of-the-best Confidence family and Core professional studio system. That’s the hi-fi equivalent of a royal lineage.
Lower down the frequency scale, the mid/bass drivers use Dynaudio’s own MSP (Magnesium Silicate Polymer) cones. These are made in one piece, with the integrated dust-cap bonded directly to the voice-coil motor behind them to make them even more stable, meaning less distortion and greater clarity of sound. It’s a tried-and-tested design that’s been used since Dynaudio’s first models, produced back in 1977. Proof that good design really is timeless.
And the crossovers – which filter the audio into the separate bands covered by each drive unit while also equalising the sound for a more even output – have a similar pedigree. They were designed and tuned by the same team that worked on Dynaudio’s Confidence, Evoke, Contour i, Special Forty, Core and Heritage Special ranges, to name but a few. Dynaudio took a mix and match approach, using a combination of first-, second- and fourth-order designs depending on the speaker, and its drivers. That means each speaker in the Emit family has been custom tuned using the best tools for the job in order to guarantee the best possible sound. It’s the opposite of a one-size-fits-all approach.
Testing that’s out of this world
The Emit range also benefits from Dynaudio’s considerable testing facility. Every loudspeaker in the family has been measured in its Jupiter test space – it’s a suitably huge 13 x 13 x 13m room at the heart of the company’s research and development building in Skanderborg, Denmark.
At the centre of this testing facility is a vast 6m robotic measuring array (which looks like something out of Alien). This features 31 microphones to measure the speakers’ impulse response, letting its engineers test and optimise performance on the fly. Dynaudio has been using the same testing facility for years, letting it compare speakers old and new and ensuring a remarkable consistency of sound quality. And because the mics record sound in 360 degrees, the engineers can tell how its speakers sound not only from the sweet spot, but from every position in the room. That way, there is no cheap seat.
Timeless design
Emit features a simple, elegant Scandinavian design, with clean, unfussy cabinets that were designed by the team behind some of Dynaudio’s most iconic pieces. And they come in three custom laminate finishes – black, white and walnut. This range of choice means they will complement almost any decor, and any AV setup. All speakers come with elegant black magnetic grilles.
Emit is hi-fi, distilled. Whatever your bag, be it CDs, vinyl or streaming, you’ll find an Emit speaker that will enhance your enjoyment of new favourites and breathe new life into old classics. Check them out at your local hi-fi store, or book a listening session with one of Dynaudio’s dealers, and you’ll see – and hear – what we mean.
