Most film buffs can remember an early, eye-opening moment when they became hooked on the power of the silver screen. In the whimsical Son of Rambow the main character, Will, has this revelation whilst hanging from a garage roof in a rowboat, watching a pirate copy of Rambo: First Blood. Told you it was whimsical.
Teamed up with the school bad-lad, Lee Carter, the pair set out to make a sequel to First Blood, a project that attracts the disruptive attention of a comically cool French exchange student and allows Will and Lee to form an unlikely but believable friendship.
It's a funny, sweet film filled with lo-fi visual flourishes and simple, convincing observations of schoolboy life in eighties England, and we loved it. You can watch the full review over at The Leisure Lab.
