We’re big fans of DTS Play-Fi, the whole home audio software that lets compatible devices from different brands work together to stream music, TV audio and more around your home. From soundbars to amplifiers to battery-powered speakers, the Play-Fi ecosystem is vast.
DTS isn't resting on its laurels though – the company is about to take Play-Fi to the next level with a brand new home cinema mode for TVs that promises high-end, object-based surround sound without the need for complicated boxes or wires.
DTS Play-Fi Immersive Home Theater supports home cinema’s holy trinity – Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and IMAX Enhanced – thus helping to reveal extra detail and bring the magic of Hollywood into your home by streaming up to 12-channels of surround sound.
The configuration is up to you (not to mention your budget). It could be as simple as a TV paired with a soundbar streaming 12-channels of immersive sound (not just stereo like with Bluetooth), or as complex as a full-fat 7.2.4 surround sound system with discrete speaker locations. You can even use your TV’s built-in speakers as part of the set-up.
Skeptical of wireless support for 7.2.4? We hear you. Latency – where the audio is not in sync with the video – has typically been an issue with multi-channel wireless devices, leading some manufacturers to resort to eye-wateringly expensive wireless components.
Happily, DTS reckons it’s solved these headaches. Play-Fi is essentially software, and works over standard Wi-Fi, so there’s no need for pricey components and devices should be easy to update.
Indeed, DTS tells us that nearly all Play-Fi products will be capable of connecting to Play-Fi Immersive Home Theater TVs – supporting up to 12-Channel Home Theater. A nice touch. The first Play-Fi Immersive Home Theater TVs will be select 2023 models from Philips via over-the-air updates later this year.
Ready to say goodbye to cable spaghetti and make the most of today’s immersive home cinema audio formats? Or maybe you're wondering which devices will support the new functionality at launch? Head over to DTS Play-Fi to learn more.
