Sennheiser is giving away a free Ambeo subwoofer worth AU$119.95 with every purchase of an Ambeo Mini (AU$1299.95) or Ambeo Plus (AU$2499.95) soundbar this month, giving AFL footy fans looking to upgrade their TV sound system the perfect incentive to do so.

Simply add one of those two soundbar models to your shopping cart at the Sennheiser webstore and the Ambeo subwoofer will wing its way to your home with it (Sennheiser has confirmed to What Hi-Fi? that you don't need to add the sub itself to your cart). The freebie deal is available now and runs until the 6th October.

Both Ambeo soundbars can be bought cheaper elsewhere – the Ambeo Mini is AU$872 on Amazon; the Ambeo Plus is AU$2399 on Amazon – but Sennheiser's deal offers better value when you consider the price of the soundbar/sub pair.

The Mini delivers the three-dimensional sound of Ambeo technology inside a compact and, compared to the other models, affordable package. We found it expensive compared to its best peers and lacking in low-end bass (which a subwoofer would naturally help with), but this deal certainly helps its case.

The bigger Plus is expensive but oh so worth it. If you want a Dolby Atmos soundbar that creates a vast room-filling sound from a compact chassis, the Ambeo Plus has to go on your shortlist – not least given the free subwoofer deal.

Sennheiser has earned itself a big reputation in the soundbar market since its Ambeo technology and models arrived. The Ambeo Max may be the true star of the trio – it is a What Hi-Fi? Award winner, after all – but while it's currently on sale for AU$2499 at Amazon, it isn't part of Sennheiser's sub giveaway offer. Sennheiser does plan to match that Amazon price from 19th September to the 6th October, though.

Thankfully, the Ambeo Plus is an excellent soundbar that can too fill a room with clear, dynamic and exciting sound. Our five-star review called out its "frankly astonishing ability to fill a room with sound" and "spectacular Dolby Atmos handling, with a truly impressive sense of height achieved via the upward-firing speakers". The Ambeo Plus proved as talented musically as it is with films, too, and while it delivers "impressively weighty bass" for a single chassis, it would no doubt be aided by an Ambeo subwoofer in the low-end department.

Admittedly, the Ambeo Mini isn't as special in our eyes. While it produces a clear sound with plenty of detail, meaning it gets the sonic basics right, it doesn't push sound out into a room very well and falls short of the dynamic expression necessary to truly captivate. Ultimately, it is pretty expensive for its price, but it is better value at least with a free sub thrown in – and that sub will no doubt beef up the Ambeo Mini's modest low-end delivery.

We know which package we would jump on, but unless you're racing to upgrade for the footy finals kicking off this weekend, you have a month to mull it over. You can read our Which Sennheiser Ambeo soundbar should you buy in 2024? article for a more thorough rundown of all three Ambeo models, too.
