It's difficult to resist the stare of the Mezzo 6s. The traditional wood finish (it's actually a very convincing wood composite), the graphite-grey baffle and aluminium drivers are a potent union of sophistication and modernity.

There are a couple of other attractive touches that are worthy of note, including the curved cabinet, the elegant magnetic grilles and eye-catching, custom-made bullet terminals.

But, one of the most striking features of this speaker is the 2.5cm aluminium tweeter. It's not much to look at from the front, but it actually uses M-S's Aspirated Tweeter Technology, taken from its high-end Performance Series.

The technology includes using a number of strategically positioned vents, visible on the top of the tweeter, that allow the driver to breathe. Mordaunt Short claims that this enables the tweeter to produce a more open and detailed sound.

These claims certainly seem to be backed up by their assured performance. Treble sounds clear and spacious, and this allows extremely fine detail to shine through. There's no sign of brightness, and it doesn't stick out at the expense of the other frequencies.

Plenty of power, never overwhelming
The clarity on show continues down the frequency range and is complimented by the rhythmic, agile delivery of the mid-range and bass. Vocals and instruments throughout the Kings of Leon track Fans sound natural, expressive and are delivered with verve and vigour.

There's good bass weight and power on hand, but you never feel overwhelmed. The Mezzo 6s are extremely musical: their dynamic expressive sound makes listening to the Dark Knight OST an absolute delight. You're taken on a rollercoaster journey that absorbs every dramatic high and eerie low along the way.

As you'd expect with a five-star speaker, it's extremely difficult placing any criticism at the feet of the Mordaunt-Shorts. We would, however, warn against partnering the Mezzos with electronics that err on the bright side. Such a partnership could quite easily exaggerate their expressive top end.

At the end of the day, the Mezzo 6s aren't the shy and retiring type. They're perfect for all you thrillseekers.
