Companies dedicated to creating iPod accessories have sprung up all over the place, all vying for a prime spot on Apple's lengthy coat-tails. Many appear content to peddle any cute-looking dross, but thankfully a few – including iLuv – take the time to listen to their wares.
The i552 is one of iLuv's latest offerings and, despite the generic plastic design, it actually dares to impress. Not only does it support all iPods with a dock connection, but it also welcomes first-generation Shuffles, and has an auxiliary line input for first- and second-generation 'Pods, as well as other audio devices. A tiny remote gives you basic controls over both your 'Pod and the AM/FM radio built into the unit.
Happy with complexity
The i552 doesn't sound that much different from the iRhythms A302, except it handles bass a little better. The midrange and detail-retrieval are adequate, while the timing holds up well when listening to complex tracks such as Kraftwerk's Computer Love.
There are better iPod speaker docks out there, but for £70 the iLuv i552 gives a very good account of itself.
