If there’s a part of your hi-fi system that you want engineered to a particularly precise specification, it’s your turntable. Finding those small gains in performance by upgrading components, build processes and even the finish, is important business when it comes to high-end audio. That’s perhaps why SME, based in Sussex, England, has proved so successful - precision engineering is what it does best.
Having started life as The Scale Model Equipment Company, manufacturing scale models and parts for the model engineering trade, the company turned its engineering skills to the audio industry, first making tonearms and later turntables. And it does it very well, as testified by various What Hi-Fi? five-star reviews, and a 2020 Temptation Award for the SME Synergy.
In 2021 the company is celebrating its 75th anniversary and, as something of an early celebration, it has launched the SME Model 6, the company’s most affordable turntable yet. The Model 6 is a chance for more people than ever to experience the unique high end audio company’s sound.
Normally responsible for more expensive turntables, SME is confident that the Model 6 represents excellent value for money (it's all relative) and the level of outstanding performance you'd expect from the company – and a recent What Hi-Fi? five-star review certainly backs that up.
The Model 6 is equipped with an improved version of the highly acclaimed SME M2-9 tonearm, boasts an impressive cartridge weight range capacity of 2 to 12 grams, and is designed for use with both MM and MC cartridges.
The main bearing, spindle and drive pulleys are precision made to the same exact standards as all SME high-end turntables, despite the Model 6’s more affordable price. In addition, the Model 6 comes with a new generation electronic speed control unit providing fine pitch speed adjustment within a wide band range.
The turntable chassis is CNC machined from a unique polymer high density resin material, which provides a high mass from a small footprint to ensure superb resonance absorption and help deliver its class-leading sonic performance.
In our What Hi-Fi? five-star review, we praised the record player’s understated, transparent sound, superb precision and resolution, and its excellent build quality.
