F1 2024 season preview
If you thought the season finale would be all about McLaren and Ferrari's constructors' championship showdown and Lewis Hamilton's farewell, Max Verstappen's had other ideas. He may be the newly-crowned four-time back-to-back drivers' champion, but it's his party and he'll cry if he wants to.
He launched a vicious personal attack on George Russell this week, branding him "a loser" and "a backstabber" – two of the milder insults – after the Mercedes man was bumped up to pole in Qatar last week, at Verstappen's expense. The Dutchman was deemed by the race stewards to have been impeding the Brit.
With the two men briefing against each other in interviews rather than speaking face-to-face, it's no surprise that the row has escalated to such a degree. Other drivers have got involved too, with Lando Norris backing Verstappen (and stirring the pot), and Fernando Alonso coming to Russell's defence.
Out on the track, Charles Leclerc is only eight points behind Norris, but he's taken a hefty grid penalty that's dropped him all the way back to 19th. Norris, meanwhile, is on pole, and can count on Oscar Piastri to hold off Carlos Sainz and Max Verstappen.
