Charles Leclerc has inherited pole position from Max Verstappen for today’s Belgian Grand Prix, after the Dutchman was hit with a 10-place grid penalty for taking a new power unit. It came as an almighty shock to both Ferrari and the driver himself, who hasn’t really threatened since May, though at Spa-Francorchamps the man on pole can be a sitting duck. The Belgian Grand Prix starts at 2pm BST / 9am ET.

By his side is none other than Sergio Perez, whose woeful performances have put him on the brink of losing his Red Bull seat. Rumour has it that the Belgian Grand Prix will be make or break for Checo, though Christian Horner's preferred candidate for his seat, Daniel Ricciardo, has been dominated all season by his RB teammate Yuki Tsunoda.

The Red Bull has looked by some distance the fastest car at Spa-Francorchamps, with the gap between Verstappen and Leclerc bigger than that between Leclerc and George Russell in seventh, though the driving rain has now made way for blazing sunshine in the Ardennes. Lewis Hamilton will start from the third slot on the grid, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri rounding out the front five.
