NEWS: Panasonic confirms 24 new UK flatscreens - all 32in+, including 37in plasma

Pana Lifestyle

Panasonic has confirmed its 2008 line-up of flatscreen TVs - 9 new LCDs, and 15 new plasmas, some in shops as early as next week [EDIT: Review of first new set - TX32LZD80 - now online, here]. All claim to offer enhanced colour reproduction, superior contrast and improved motion handling - as well as being more environmentally friendly.

Surprises include the LCD range featuring only 32- and 37in models, while the plasma range will now include 37-, 42-, 46- and 50in sets.

As we reported from CES, all the TVs will carry the Viera brand-name.

The new Vieras will come in 8-, 80-, 81-, 85- and 800-series varieties, and as previously, Panasonic drops handy hint in the model name as to its spec. Hence all 12 Full HD models - all of which fully support 24fps - carry a 'Z', while HD Ready TVs feature an 'X'. Plasma are denoted by the 'TH' prefix and LCDs by 'TX'.

Hence the TX32LZD80 is a 32in Full HD LCD set (and one we're going to be exclusively reviewing in our May issue, out April 3rd).

But now the sets in more details. The flagship ‘Z800’ series – four HDMI sockets, enhanced sound system and claimed contrast ratio of 30,000:1 – includes 42- and 50in PZ800 plasmas and a 37in LZ800 LCD.

Child-proof plasmas?

Pz800-Web-1 The Z800 plasmas (pictured) also feature toughened front-panel glass, designed to withstand the onslaught of up to 4 joules of impact. Panasonic added this feature after many reports of broken screens thanks to flying Nintendo remote controls during energetic Wii Sports sessions!

We saw the sets repeatedly bashed at their weakest, centre point by a hefty steel ball - as well as on video being assailed by children's toys - and were impressed by their durability. Their parent appeal is further boosted by a new easy-clean surface...

All Viera sets claim to be have been given a sonic boost via Panasonic's V Audio upgrade, despite boasting 40 percent slimmer speakers. The 800 series sets featuring an additional V Audio Surround bass module.

First Full HD sets due from March

You'll have to wait until July for the 800 series, but Full HD Vieras will be in the shops sooner - in the form of the Z85 and Z80 lines.

The new Z85 line features 42- and 46-in PZ85 plasmas and 32- and 37in LCDs. The sets feature three HDMI sockets to the 800s' four, but otherwise share many of the high-end features - including Intelligent Frame Creation, intended to produce the very smoothest, picture with 24fps video.

Completing the Full HD line-up are Z80 models, offering 15,000:1 contrast ratios and three HDMI sockets. They include 42-, 46- and 50in PZ80 plasmas and 32- and 37in LZ80 LCDs.

Freesat and HD Ready sets

Moving on, we've already reported here on the Freesat-ready 81-series, which come out in the summer - we'll update you when more details arrive on these intriguing models.

The 2008 range is completed by seven HD Ready ‘X’ models, including entry-level PX8 plasmas (37-, 42- and 50in), better-specified PX80 plasmas (37- and 42in) plus 32- and 37in LXD85 LCDs.

The TH37PX80 and TH42PX80 sets are already being advertised for £699 and £799 respectively - indicating that this year's sets are coming in at similar prices to the outgoing models.

Want a smaller or larger set? Panasonic's existing '7' series sets carry on at the 26- and 65in sizes – in fact we'll be testing the latest 65in model in our May issue, out April 3rd.

Viera styling update

As mentioned, Panasonic's new range includes no less than four different cabinet designs. The entry-level '8' models have a more basic look: Viera 42Px8

While the '85 and '800 series sets have a new silver-flash styling: Viera-42Px80

And the intermediate '80 sets have a unique base design: Viera-42Px85

Finally, the flagship LCD design - the TH-37LZD800 - features sound-mounted speakers, just as its 'LZD700 predecessor currently does. Here is a detail shot: Viera 37Lzd800D Detail

Eco features

Panasonic is also claiming the 2008 Vieras are its most environmentally friendly yet: all its plasmas are now lead-free; the use of recycled and recyclable materials has increased, and all but the entry-level '8' series feature an energy-saving Eco mode to reduce power use.

The company has also previewed three next-gen plasma TV designs that will go into production from 2009 - super-thin, super-large and energy-saving sets.

UPDATE - The first two 80 models hit shops in March, with other 8, 80 and 85 sets being rolled out in March/April/May.

81 and 800 sets from June/July.

felicia February 28, 2008 10:17

as usual panasonic uk's website is the last to list the new plasma's. Info on there german site though.

Sam B February 28, 2008 11:59

great post - really good rundown of the new models, and a handy summary of the naming scheme.

I'll be interested to see if the new models perform as well as their predecessors. Otherwise people will be wondering why Pana haven't come out with more large LCD sets.

tom_mk February 28, 2008 12:15

Is there any idea on pricing of these models.  I'm literally in the process of purchasing a new flat screen, which was going to be a Pana, in the next couple of weeks, and am now wondering whether a) to hold off and get a bargin as the old models come down in price or b) splash the cash on a new model because it'll be so much better than the old models.

goldeneye February 28, 2008 12:20

Splash the cash mate, thats what I'm doing - unless it is the deal of all deals. These new models sound amazing on paper, but I'm really looking forward to seeing how it handles true 24p from blu-ray BOO-YAH!

al7478 February 28, 2008 14:49

Im lucky here as i didnt intend to get a tv til later this year, and if these new ones are at a similar price to outgoing ones ill bide my time and research them.

im a little confused tho - i know you explained the model names, but which are the 37" plasmas, and do we know their prices yet...?

Clare Newsome February 28, 2008 15:00

Panasonic would give no indication on pricing, but as you can see from the two examples given in the story above (£699 for the 37in plasma; £799 for the 42in), real-world prices seems to be coming in at a similar level to the outgoing range.

There are two 37in plasmas in the new range - both HD Ready rather than Full HD (Pana is leaving that to the LCD at this size) - the TH37PX80 (£699 retail) and the TH37PX8 (price TBC - but as this is an entry-level model, probably lower!)

al7478 February 28, 2008 15:23

Thanks Clare! Much obliged.

I seem to be somewhat "hard of thinking/reading/comprehending today lol!

kacey68 February 28, 2008 20:56

The TX32LZD80 which you right is a 32in Full HD LCD set sounds awesome. Is this the first full hd set coming in at 32' ? ... i havent heard of a full hd 32 so far

felicia February 28, 2008 21:14

kacey68 sharp do a 32" full hd set (see there uk website)

Clare Newsome February 28, 2008 21:22

Samsung and Toshiba also doing Full HD 32 sets this year.

kacey68 February 28, 2008 21:38

Ok cheers for that ... I'll check um out.

Dave01 February 29, 2008 00:19

Grr, just bought the 37PX70 about 3 weeks ago...

Nothing to moan about though, its a cracking TV :)

remixes March 1, 2008 08:38

Hi guys have got to admit I had to pick my tongue up off the floor looking at the new pana lineup! The 42PZ800 looks very sexy indeed im even considering asking william hill for odds on it getting 5 stars lol?

But have I fallen in love to soon only to find a nasty shock when they release the prices!!! come on somebody must know how much this particular model will be .... I cant wait til spring its to long? and any how when is spring these days??

Clare Newsome March 1, 2008 09:19

As mentioned above, the 800 models will be in the shops by June (that's as much as Panasonic will say - it could, of course, be before June....)

Again, with the other sets coming in at similar real-world prices to the departing ranges, i'd expect the TH42PZ800 to come in with a list price of @ £2000 that will rapidly fall to £1500 or even less in the real world. After all, you can get its predecessor for as little as £1300 these days...

foulds March 1, 2008 20:52

will the  TH58PZ800 be in the shops in june

Clare Newsome March 1, 2008 22:48

No news of the 58in models making it to the UK - they seem to be a US-only option at the moment.

remixes March 2, 2008 17:08

Nice one Clare thanks very much as always

Dazmb March 2, 2008 18:43

Seems to me to be too many layers in the Panny range. Basic, Intermediate and flagship would have been better than the 4 layer cake IMO. But i suppose we all want more cake...

A plea to WHF - please when you review these models can give an indication as to how the stack up in performance compared to 2007 range. We all have (from WHF reviews) a good idea of the +/- of LXD70 etc, so by saying new model is better in say motion handling capabilities will give us peeps a good idea of their talents. Just a thought.

antonyelliot March 3, 2008 11:25

was going to buy a 42lz70 but think i might hold on for a bit now for either a lz80 or lz85. hopefully it wont be too long to wait for these sets! does anyone have any idea what the major differences are between the 80 and the 85?

also do you lovely folks at whfsv have any idea when you might be geting your mitts on any of these for a review!?

Clare Newsome March 3, 2008 11:56

The 85s don't have as many bells and whistles as the 800s (eg one less HDMI socket; not such a sophisticated sound system) but otherwise seem remarkably similar. Tough to tell from the specs released so far - we'll get a lot more idea when we see them side-by-side.

And we'll be reviewing the new sets imminently - first one up is the TX32LZD80 (Full HD 32in) in the May issue (out April 3rd) then one of the 37in plasmas, then the new 42in - whole series of tests lined up!

catspjm March 3, 2008 17:05

Slowly but surely going mad here! After 3 months research, I went into my friendly local TV shop on Saturday, armed with the necessary readies to pick up a TH42PZ70. They informed me that said beastie is being replaced in a few weeks with the PZ80 range and to come back then as they had absolutely no details!  Grrrrr! Back to the drawing board or do you think it is worth a punt Clare?

One final question. Am I better to go for a Denon DVD 1940 or a cheap Blu ray player or PS3 (max budget of around £300). I dont play games, so it will be just to watch movies.

kev g March 4, 2008 19:13

I for one am looking forward to a Supertest Issue of 32" full HD sets from Panasonic, Toshiba & Samsung.

belmont97 March 5, 2008 21:24

I went into John Lewis on Saturday to be told about the new models and that the price would be the same as the existing models - JL were selling the 32 inch 700 for about £800.

asharb123 March 6, 2008 11:29

Like catspjm I had the money ready to buy the TH42PZ70 and then came along the Z800. When will WHF be able to do a group test of the Z800, so we know how it compares against its rivals and know if its worth waiting for and buying. I appreciate that it will not be available until June, but WHF must be able to pull a few strings to get one early to test. I don't really want to wait until the awards issue to find out if its worth buying or not. When I made the decision to buy the TH42PZ70, it was based on the information in WHF, as WHF has the wider knowledge base and greater insight of the market place.

pijjin March 6, 2008 23:33

Hi all,

Now then. I think the real question isn't about Panny v Old Panny - it's about how these stack up against the clear leader - Pioneer  Kuro. Kuro is just too pricey - so will these latest be within 5% of picture quality and more than 20% cheaper? If so then they'll have my custom! but they do need to be a big step on from the old range as Kuro has left everyone standing ..... in black levels, motion handling, build styling/quality and features....

hopefully we'll get advance reviews benchmarking against Kuro's well-before June for the high-end machines!??

cheers,

Mo

Scotsgirl March 7, 2008 19:36

Clare do you know how the 32LZ800 compares with the LXD700?

I am due to get a replacment for my 700 due to backlight problems and have been offered the newer model if I want to wait but not sure whether I should?

Thanks!

WAYNESTERS March 10, 2008 23:01

Hi Claire

im going to wait and buy the Panasonic TH-37LZD800

when did you say?  do you think it will be out in April? or May?

im desperate for a new 37" for my room

do these LCD`s beat the Phillips range with amberlight?

i have searched all these forums and am still racking my brains about a choice of NEW LCD TV for my bedroom

my viewing distance is just over 9 feet away from where its going to go

i have a budget of £700 MAX

cant decide on a 32" or a 37"

worried about this "burning" on screen issue, "decent black levels" and "motion blur" etc etc etc

anyone found the "perfect" LCD?

i doubt this even exists at my price range?

not looking for Plasma, heard they can be even worse for "screen burn"

i have a very good 5.1 surround sound setup now, so the sound isnt a major issue

i watch a lot of Live Music DVD Concerts, NEVER watch ANY sport apart from Boxing, watch a few action movies now and then

is it majorly important to get the FULL HD 1080i or 1080p compatibility? and with the "24" HD viewing thingy me jig ?

anyone help me make a choice?

will be buying online as to save money.........hopefully!

its so difficult to make a choice going down to Comet or Currys as i will be there for hours!

catspjm March 14, 2008 09:29

Has anyone heard when the TH42 PZ80 will be actually available for sale? Ive seen a pre order price of £1100 so far. Has anyone seem cheaper? Please share!

Scotsgirl March 17, 2008 12:02

Waynesters if you do get the 37LZD800 I would love to hear what you think of it as am interested in getting this set as well.

Daniel123 March 24, 2008 14:50

Is there a 32" 800 series coming out? Should be the model TX32LZD800.

BertUK March 24, 2008 15:32

Some of you might like to know that my local John Lewis price-matched Weymouth hi-fi on the TH-37PX80 at £679 with a 5-year  warranty.

ask_yer_ma!! March 26, 2008 12:34

Does any one know if these will have HDMI 1.3 connections?

ask_yer_ma!! March 27, 2008 20:00

Found out the answer for my question at least with respect to the TH-42PZ85B it does have HDMI 1.3. Details available here at Panasonics UK website.

www.panasonic.co.uk/.../index.html;jsessionid=c0a879f030d7210596f5918142dc90988bd0c8833a3f.e34MaN0RbxyTbO0LaxuRaxiSbxiMe6fznA5Pp7ftolbGmkTy

ask_yer_ma!! March 27, 2008 20:37

Finding out heaps about these new screens. The TH-42PZ85B  can be got online for around £1100. Found it for pre-order at play and av-sales. However play have over inflated the price of the matching blu ray player the DMP-BD30EG by £150 stating its retail price of £500 when its RRP is only £350. They are selling it at £400, £50 more expensive than the RRP...not good. The top-of-the-range 42" TH42PZ800B is available to pre-order at a number of uk sites for around the £1500 mark. It is a THX certified screen if a posting on an american forum is to be believed.

ask_yer_ma!! March 27, 2008 21:05

Found out even more....I need to get a life...lol. It is going to be THX certified here is a URL link to another site posting the info gadgets.fosfor.se/panasonic-th-42pz800 . This has now appeared on quite a few sites. It  also be ISF calabrated.

ask_yer_ma!! March 27, 2008 21:08

Here is the official panasonic wesite info

ASQ March 28, 2008 01:42

Hey anyone know when the new 50" plasma's are coming to the UK, i was just going to buy the pz70B tomorow, but now ive read all of above, think i should wait a while to see how much these are going to be.....

Clare Newsome March 28, 2008 08:48

ASQ - the 50in plasmas aren't due until June, it seems - we've an update on the story here:

whathifi.com/.../news-panasonic-product-release-timeline-including-uk-model-numbers-and-pricing.aspx

ASQ March 29, 2008 10:59

Was going to buy a 50" Panasonic plasma today, but after reading that there's going to be new ones coming out, thought i'd hold out until they are released. So i was going to get a universal wall bracket, but not to sure if its going to be suitable for the new panasonic that are going to come out.

Does anyone know whether they are VESA 400 or 600 or the actual dimensions for the brackets, as they havent actually been released, i cant find the relevant information needed.

If i buy a universal bracket, would it definately fit a 46" + as im not 100% sure which one im going to get.

When the new batch are released, im going to either get the 46" or 50", depending on the prices and the specs.

asharb123 April 8, 2008 13:06

I've also seen the TH42 PZ85B for £1,100, but is it any good compared to the competition. I was looking to buy the TH42 PZ70, which is know discontinued, but still available on the internet. Is the new PZ85B a better TV? How does it compare to the competition?

WHFI when are going to do a group test of 42inch TV's?

quincy April 12, 2008 15:42

Tryed out a 42pz700 very nice in HD but went wrong so it got sent back, no looking forward to buying a 42pz800 ! If its anything like the 700  and better I can't wait !!!

ourtone April 26, 2008 13:11

Hi all,

I want to get a large Panasonic Plasma but I want it to have 24p native.  Does the TH-50PZ80 have this?  If not I will have to downsize to the TH-46PZ85 (but its a bit small).

Can anyone let me know (Clare Newsom I'm looking at you!)??

Thanks!

Daz6546 May 3, 2008 22:34

Bought a Panasonic 37" TX-37LZD800 today from the Panasonic shop in Plymouth.  Price was £1199 but after some good old fashioned haggling (never, ever pay the 'screen' price on anything), I managed to get it for £1079 with a free five yr GT thrown in!  I have got to admit it is our first new TV for 15 yrs and was going for a Sony KDL32D3000 after reading up on all the reviews.  However the Pana looked absolutly fantastic in the shop and it ticked all the boxes.  I take delivery next Saturday........... Can't wait!!!!!
