Philips 32Pfl
Philips is further expanding its series of Ambilight TVs, with the introduction of six new models in 32-52in sizes. Prices range from £999 up to £2999.

We've already tested the 32PFL9632D in the current (October) issue of What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision, and hope to test other versions shortly.

All models feature Philips's Perfect Pixel HD Engine with 100Hz Clear LCD and HD-Natural Motion technology, intended to offer improved motion handling and contrast levels.

The Perfect Pixel HD Engine uses 10-bit digital processing, said to be capable of handling up to 248 million pixels per second.

Philips claims further impressive figures: 6.2 million pixels resolution, 8000:1 contrast ratio, 4 trillion colours and a response time of just 3ms.

All sets have Full HD, 1080p panels with the exception of the 32in, which is HD-ready.

And let's not forget Ambilight, Philips's proprietary backlighting system, which now uses LED lighting technology to deliver greater colour saturation and consume less power than previous versions.

Two-sided Ambilight is used on all the 9632D models, while the 37PFL9732D uses three-sided Ambilight.

The full model line-up is as follows:

  • 32PFL9632D £999
  • 37PFL9632D £1499
  • 42PFL9632D £1799
  • 47PFL9632D £2199
  • 52PFL9632D £2999
  • 37PFL9732D £1799

I just checked out the Philips 47PFL9632D in Comet. It was sitting next to the 46 inch Sharp AQIOS - the smaller version of the one I was just about to buy. Having seen the Philips set, now I'm not sure what to do! The shop had it running from a special Philips demo DVD box, not something you can buy, so Please let us know how the PFL9632 really compares. I must say it looked awsome in the store - best I've seen. If only I could be sure it will look that way in real life.

Perfect Pixel works! It upgrades the regular non HD transmission (Satellite and DVD) to give a smooth action.  I had the dealer hook up 42PFL9632 along with a non-Perfect Pixel (Pixel Plus engine). I took three tests and in all three 42PFL9632 was a winner. I stood just about 5 feet away from the teles. The images in Perfect Pixel (news presenters in CNN and BBC) were smooth while in other I could see squares along the edges of eyebrows and ears. On DVD, Matrix (the good old shoot out in the lobby) and the ICE AGE's opening scenes clearly showed the brilliant ability of 9632 to handle actions. 9632 is worth every penny. I wasn't much tickled with the ambilight though.
