NEWS: Falcon bridges the gap from PC to TV

Andrew Everard 07 April 2008 12:58

351 Image1 Mvix Player BlackThis is the Falcon MVIX Media Centre, designed to work as a wireless bridge between your PC and TV, and allow video content to be streamed in HD for viewing.

The £200 unit can also be used for remote storage, as it has space inside for a 3.5in hard drive, or can be used with a remote USB drive.

It's said to be capable of working with 'pretty much any media file or video format', and across Windows, Mac OSX and Linux operating systems.

The unit can connect to TVs or projectors via HDMI, DVI, composite, component or S-video connections, and in the absence of a wireless network can also be hooked up via Ethernet.

It's available from this week from online retailer Thumbs Up.

I wish if What Hi*Fi team can put more reviews on these kind of gadget as hifi is going beyond av boxes and consumer are adopting new trends to make like life simple.

I also hope if these gadgets are compared with traditional products to see how they perform in real world sense.

I'm also in the market for such a device, who wants a mountain of disks to search through? Below is some options I've explored, would welcome other opinions on the below.

MVIX HD780 (as above, called the Falcon in the UK?): www.mvix.net.au/index.html  (this is what I'm leaning towards at the moment -HD 780 does HDMI and wireless, as well upgrades for torrent downloads)

Mediagate: www.mediagateusa.com/products.html

Popcorn hour: http://www.popcornhour.com/  (brilliant system with a stupid name, but it plays everything inc MKV (hi-def compressed files) and even does torrent downloads directly without need for a computer - unfortunately theres a waiting list of months!)

Dvico Tvix: www.cnet.com.au/.../0,239035858,339283113,00.htm (these are pretty good, more high end but very expensive -the Mvix will do the same for much cheaper)

andrew can you tell me if the audio quality from the mvix is as good as playing from a cd player if the audio file is uncompressed
