Your favourite top 10 singles, please?

If someone sat you down in a small room and asked you to name your fav top 10 singles, what would they be?

It could connected to a family holiday, your very first date or just musical brilliance. And they don't have to be in numerical order either.

My favs are as follows:

10) The Who - don't get fooled again
9)Joe Jackson - Is she really going out with him
8)Tom Petty - Free Falling
7)Freida Payne - Band of Gold
6)Longpigs - On and on
5)Squeeze - Is that love
4)Coldplay - Shiver(live version)
3)Big Country - Chance
2)Lenny Kravitz - Are you gonna go my way
1)Crowded House - Its only natural

Do they have to be singles?

Not exclusively. They could be E.P.'s or albums and 'B' sides.

Tricky. Might look something like this (today) - though I can't put an order on them right now:

The Right Place (Eddi Reader)
Subdivisions (Rush)
Stay With Me Till Dawn (Judie Tzuke)
Turn It On Again (Genesis)
Cloudbusting (Kate Bush)
Wait (Sarah McLachlan)
Separate Ways/Worlds Apart (Journey)
He Knows You Know (Marillion)
Down To You (Joni Mitchell)
Solisbury Hill (Peter Gabriel)

There is some good stuff there, JD. It's really difficult because if I was to pose the same question this evening my favs would probably change dramatically.

isnt that ''wont get fooled again'' not ''dont get fooled again''??

Blimey P.P. This is so, so, so, soooo... hard but you know I can`t resist this sort of thing! Well, I`ve thought about it for 15 mins or so and here is a list. Of course, because it`s been done in just 15 mins it`s very likely I`ve missed some of my real top ten. Maybe all of them! Here goes anyway. Oh by the way, these are all singles.

Dollar  -  Give Me Back My Heart

Christina Aguilera  -  Hurt

Bonnie Tyler  -  Total Eclipse Of The Heart

Rush  -  Spirit Of Radio

Voyager  -  Halfway Hotel

Matt Monro  -  Walk Away

Heart  -  Alone

Meat Loaf  -  Two Out Of Three Ain`t Bad

Alan Parsons Project  -  Old And Wise

The Walker Brothers  -  Love Her

It`s a dream it`s out of reach

Heh. I have both the Longpigs albums... died a death eh, and yep a very good song.

I think its impossible to pick 10 songs, let alone singles...
But off the top of my head, thinking which songs have been the biggest for me over the years, and now...

Marillion - Grendel
Faith No More - The Real Thing
Boards of Canada - Peacock tail
Aphex Twin - Ageispolis
Pearl Jam - Black
EF - Tomorrow my friend
My Exit Music - Dust
Slayer - At dawn they sleep
Morbid Angel - Abomonations
The Cure - 100 years
Genesis - Mad man moon

in no order, although Grendel has been played so many times I lose count.

I know. A friend of mine and I, some years ago, sat in a pub and within 20 mins our top 10 changed about 5 or 6 times.

Re: Your favourite top 10 singles, please?

Well, it's impossible, isn't it? Can it just be top 10 artists? Guess not... If it has to be singles, today's selection in no particular order:

Elvis Presley - I Got Stung

Elvis Costello  - Oliver's Army

Frank Sinatra - One for my baby

Nancy Sinatra - Sugar Town

Dusty Springfield - The Look of Love

Crowded House - Distant Sun

The Rolling Stones - Wild Horses

Stevie Wonder - Superstition

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah

The Beatles - Yesterday

And believe it or not, that's quite contemporary by my standards (i've spent most of the morning listening to the Ella  Fitzgerald Songbooks on vinyl...) Big Smile

Re: Your favourite top 10 singles, please?

You've got great taste, Claire. I love Costello, Buckley, the Prefab 4 and I omitted Bowie.

My alternative last night is:

David Bowie - Ashes to ashes
The Jam - The bitterist pill
Crowded House - Don't dream its over
Elvis Costello - Alison (my aim is true)
The beatles - Hello, goodbye
Labi Siffre - Something inside so strong
Rolling Stones - Tops ('B' side to Start me up)
The Kinks - Waterloo sunset
The Supremes - Baby love
Muse - Plug in baby

Sorry for the alternative, But given how difficult it is I feel there's no other choice but to add others outside my original choice
