At last I am ready : ) another Thaiman's golf thread

I swing a fine 200 yards today ohhhhh YES.

In January I couldn't even hit the ball let alone go as far as 50 yards!

I will be learning Putting next, now that is very tricky.

lol, I am bad at golf (used to regularly hit over 110), but I did once overshoot a raised 300 yard par 4 green with a 3 wood...

Re: At last I am ready : ) another Thaiman's golf thread

Ah proper golf. I play a bit of "pitch and putt", basically mini golf. Longest hole is about 100 yards, 18 holes all par 3.

I would love to have proper lessons and get into real golf, but the time and cost involved is too much for me. So I just stick to pitch and putt. An old friend from work gave me his old set of clubs for free a few years ago. As he played real golf we used to go for a round after work in the summer and he would give me a few tips. It's amazing what a few pointers can do for you.

I wish I could hit 200 yards, best I have done is about 120 yards with a 9 iron. At the back of the pitch and putt course I go to theres a big field with a mini lake in the middle. So at the end of last summer I decided to use up all my old golf balls and tried to use the 3 wood for the 1st time. Well I tried about 40 times and I couldn't get the ball more than about 30 yards. I either topped the ball or it went pretty far but with a massive slice. I couldn't get the hang of swinging that big club, especially as I normally use a pitching wedge for pitch and putt.

It's amazing how hard it is to hit a golf ball long and straight. Hell even straight is hard enough. Tiger woods makes it look very easy.

You can't beat a round of golf in the summer. Amazing game and totally adictive.

When there's a few of us playing we play for a beer. The loser has to buy everyone a drink on the 19th, or failing that we go for closet to the flag on the 18th. Golf and a free beer is hard to beat.

It is addictive SpiceWeasel, you are not wrong there.
I can't find my original golf's thread but it was a while back now there were some good tips posted there. I just come back from driving range, hitting 3 buckets of balls (150!!!) result in a bad blisters on my thumps :-( ....no golf tomorrow (crying icon here)

Stick with it guys, it's incredibly rewarding Smile

Best golf tip in the world is to "swing through" and don't "hit at". So many bad shots are caused by people trying to hit the ball as hard as they can!

And get lessons! When you start, listen to your pro, and your pro only. Not well-meaning folk on a website Wink

Re: At last I am ready : ) another Thaiman's golf thread

I got given a really good golf techniques book for xmas a few years back. Some really good tips and it's in plain english with lots of diagrams/pictures etc. Excellent for beginers http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ultimate-Golf-Techniques-DK-Living/dp/0751305944

Even with my very amateurish skills I found the book to be really good. It tells you exactly what you should be doing, and how to play certain shots. Deffinately recomended.

Driver mate and yes, it went forward :-)

The in-house pro was hitting over 200 yards with iron 7!

Can anyone tell me Is it worth buying a 9 degree driver to replace my 10.5? What would be the main different? I noticed most of Highend name like Callaway and Taylormade are 8 or 9 degree....Why is that?
cheers

No.
I'm no expert, but the lower the angle the harder it is to hit.
If you are really good the lower the angle, can mean the further you hit.
For hackers like you and me, a 3 wood is plenty. A 10.5 driver absolutely plenty.

Agree. Basically the lower angle gives it a lower flight path, which means you need to have a hell of a swing to take advantage of it.

Unless you are likely to trouble 300yds with a 10.5 degree, then I wouldn't bother. The chances are that all you will do is slice the hell out of the ball trying to put too much weight behind the swing.

I don't hit anything more than a 5-wood, which I can get comfortably to 200+, and normally straight. If I use a 3 or driver, a slice starts to creep in.

For me, 200 straight down the fairway is better than 250 in the rough!

Thanks for replys guys :-)

I couldn't hit 200 yards with 5 wood! (150 max) but I just about reach the distance with LoCo driver. May be I should start practicing my other clubs as I have been driver frenzy for the last few weeks.

Next question....The silly money clubs like Callaway and Nike, How much would they improve my game? Would it be a placebo effect?

If you are not a particularly hard hitter, then I'd recommend getting some graphite shafted irons...
And much like a good hifi shop, a good golf shop will give good advice. If you're average round is in the 100's, it's pointless spending £1000 or more on a set of ping irons, and £300+ on a driver.

I am nothing more than a hacker, but if I was 150 yards away from the pin, then it would be an 8 iron...;)

...also, the placebo affect with a big fat driver only works until you take a swing...!
(unfortunately you can't kid yourself you're Tiger Woods) although a slight extra confidence might help...until you send your first ball 20 feet, and then its out the window.

Depends on your swing (speed, accuracy etc). Your local pro would be the best way to go - especially if you have a driving range where you can "watch them fly before you buy" to quote my local pro shop!

FWIW I use Mizuno Comp-EZ irons with regular flex steel shafts (semi-cavity backed, but designed to be easy to hit rather than ultra-accurate for the pros). I didn't get on with graphite shafts - too whippy for me.

Be aware (especially as it's you Thaiman) that upgradeitis can also affect golfers. But unlike Hifi, the results are not subjective - you'll be able to hit well with one set but not necessarily with the other. You really have to try before buying!!!
