Re: Marillion.

WOW! Someone's mentioned Marillion, fantastic, been listening to them all afternoon, newer stuff mainly: Radiation, Marbles, Somewhere Else, Marillion.com and This Strange Engine.

I think I've got just about everything they've recorded and I love the Fish era as much as the H era stuff. Not to everyone's taste, but so what.

Think I'll dig out Grendel when I get home

Find a better life at marillion.com. Hope I get some free tickets for mentioning that, LOL!!
I love that track. I had a VHS at one point with a live version of that and The Web, which was fantastic.

I never really got into them after Fish left though (even though I have a few of those albums) - although arguably the solo Fish stuff is even worse (out of water?)

*edit - Sorry that sounds like I think the post-Fish stuff is bad.. Far from it, I just never got on with it.

The solo Fish stuff however, I do think is pretty terrible for the most part, but again, its all subjective...:)

Re: Marillion.

Great band; saw them play Edinburgh Playhouse's then mini-venue, the Nite Club back in November 1982, about 6 months before they made it big with the Script... album. Trouble was, Fish was so tall for the fiarly cramped stage, he just about hit some of the lights when he started bouncing up and down!

Re: Marillion.

Well, given I have been listening again, I ordered some remasters...

I downloaded the mentioned version of Grendel, and have now got it in my hand in nice 1999 24 bit digital remaster of Script..., .... I also took a punt on Fish - 13th Star, and yes, it's pretty cheesy and missing something for me.

In any case, the Fish era albums never sounded so great! (Cant believe these things are 8+ yrs old)

Great band. Both with Fish and also with Hogarth.

Saw them on the Marbles tour couple of years ago and they were superb. Started off so-so and just got better and better!

Met Fish last year in a pub after a Mostly Autumn gig.  He gave me a real hard time about spending too much time listening to the old Marillion albums and not buying his latest solo cds!

I know what I like ..
Well, I gave him a blind punt on '13th star' - and while it's ok, it LACKS the bite of pre Hogarth Marillion for me...

In fact I managed to sit through Fugazi, Script..., Misplaced Childhood, Clutching at Straws, and attempted 'Brave' - 'Brave' lasted 3 tracks and I had had enough... Boy would I love a break-up/ reunion...

Hi fr0g. `Brave` although good is not the album I would recommend to someone trying to get into the Hogarth fronted Marillion. I`d start with either `Holidays In Eden` or `Afraid Of Sunlight`. After that I`d get them to try `Seasons End`. If they`re still up for it then go onto `Marbles` and `Brave`. Actually, `Anaroknaphobia` is pretty good.(Hope I`ve spelt that last one correctly!)

But I understand exactly what you`re saying. Those early albums fronted by Fish with the wonderful Jester imagery adorning the gatefold sleeves. To think that `B` Sides Themselves` is probably far superior to most bands Greatest Hits of `A` sides. Ah yes, they were good days.

Regarding a reunion? I wouldnt bet against it. After all they appeared on stage together last year so its not as if they`re not talking to each other. The nostalgia scene in rock music is a big one. Bruce Dickinson came back to Iron Maiden, Rob Halford came back to Judas Priest, Phil Collins came back to Genesis  and Dave Lee Roth has gone back to Van Halen. Wouldnt even be surprised to see Morrissey reform the Smiths one day.

Keep your fingers crossed!
Heh. I have Seasons End ,Holidays in Eden and Brave of the current lineup... And I found although I still liked it, it didn't have the raw visceral edge in the sound that it did with Fish - And also the lyrics... I loved Fish's amazing command of english... Overblown and cheesy maybe, but poetry to my ears...
Your perimeter of courtiers jerk like celluloid puppets

As you stutter paralysed with rabbits eyes, searing the shadows

Flooding the wings, to pluck elusive salvation from the understudys lips

Retrieve the soliloque, maintain the obituary

My cue line in the last act and you wait in silent solitude

Waiting for the prompt, waiting for the prompt

Youve played this scene before

Yeah fr0g. You`re right. Brilliant lyrics. Something pretty special going on in that mans head.

Later today I`m going to have a listen to Fugazi and `B sides themselves`.

Seen them live with both line ups, fantastic.

Bit miffed I missed the Marbles tour though :-(

And I'd pay a serious amount of cash to see a reunion with Fish, but I'm not holding my breath.

Re: Marillion.

I take it you missed the mini Fish/Marillion reunion last year when they performed Market Square Heroes together at some festival Fish was headlining?
