Are Games Consoles Just For Kids?

Would just be interesting to find out how many of you play games, particularly the PS3 or Xbox 360.

Re: Are Games Consoles Just For Kids?

I do. Having grown up with the Commodore Vic20, then the 64, then the Amiga (yes I was very much a Commodore kid!) and then switching to the Playstation in my late teens, all the way up to the current Xbox 360 and PS3 now in my early thirties, I can't ever see a time when I won't have the latest games console or two under my TV!

Re: Are Games Consoles Just For Kids?

Average age of gamers is on the increase, as the original Playstation generation grows up and keeps on gaming!

This BBC report from three years ago has average age of UK gamer as 28, but if you talk to Sony/Microsoft they'll put that into the 30-something bracket (which, of course, 28 year-olds in 2005 would be now!)

EDIT - and Prof's just backed that up! It's also interesting that High St sales of gaming software overtook those of music earlier this year, and are closing fast on DVD sales...

It's always a shame when you find out you're average...

Re: Are Games Consoles Just For Kids?

Used to have a PS1, now just use the laptop - mostly into RPG's, strategy and of course, the mighty Championship Manager (now Football Manager). The occasional fright-fest (Resident Evil 2 and Silent Hill were absolute winners on the PS1 IMO) and I'm a happy chap!

Being 43, does this make me above average then...?!?!

Re: Are Games Consoles Just For Kids?

What? The ZX Spectrum has been overtaken as the No.1 home computer? Shurely not... Wink

I must confess to a bit of Mario-Kart or WiiFat, but I haven't got the patience for most 360/PS3 games. I need to switch on, play 5 mins and switch back off again before my boredom threshold is exceeded.

Of course, there is always This classic game or even better, This!

Sorry to those of you who are A) under 28 and wonder what the h3ll these are or B) those over 28 who were hoping to get some work done this afternoon...

A 'Heck No' and a 'Oh yes'. 41 and proud of it. I'm still using the PS2 at the mo but will eventually get round to buying a PS3. funny how it always drop down the 'things to get' list as there is always something more pressing to buy.

Re: Are Games Consoles Just For Kids?

I am fast approaching 30 (Feb next year) and play my 360 far more than my girlfriend is happy about.  I have quite a few friends around my age that play and would definately say that gaming is not just for kids anymore.  It's a multi billion pound industry and needs to target those with the most disposable income to survive, so the question may soon be  'Should kids be allowed to play these adult entertainment devices?' !

And I can't wait for that day......................heaven - a game of COD4 with no immature little brats intent on team killing

Re: Are Games Consoles Just For Kids?

Well I am 41, and play PS3.
Like Prof I started with Commodore, except with the Pet (at school), typing in games from magazines!!, then Vic 20 , C 64, and Amiga 1200

Then got into PC gaming, and at one point (before broadband, and before unlimted dial up numbers), my telephone bill hit £450 a quarter (JUST PLAYING QUAKE2)...
I even had ISDN installed to play that game eventually, then early adopter of broadband...

PS3 is my first console, and its great, but can't touch a high end PC...(I just got fed up with having to upgrade the damn thing all the time)
In fact I dont know what all the fuss about HD consoles is! PCs have been high def for years!

Re: Are Games Consoles Just For Kids?

I started with an Acorn Electron when I was around 7 or 8. Had that for donkeys years, then went straight to a PC (my mum and dad wouldn't let me have an Amiga, booo). Since that trusty 286 I've had a number of PC's, a Master system, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Xbox, 360 and a Wii. And that doesn't cover the hundreds of pounds I must have shovelled into my local amusement arcades.

I'm 31 now, and still love games as much as I did when I was a kid.

Re: Are Games Consoles Just For Kids?

I'm hitting the big 50 this year, started out with the ZX81 & 16k ram pack(spent hours and hours typing in poster programmes). Then on to the Spectrum which had colour and sound(wahoo!!), moved on to the Commodre 64 followed by the Amiga A500 with memory upgrade to a whole 1meg.

Then bought a PS1, that really got me into gaming, never looked back, i've since got the PS2, PS3 & xbox 360. Still got the lot apart from the Commodre 64 which i part exchanged for the Amiga. Long may it continue.

Re: Are Games Consoles Just For Kids?

Thanks al30tsm. Thought I was gonna be the oldest! I'm 43 and started my gaming career on a PC. Only really into first person shooters....Duke Nukem, Quake, Quake2 and Halflife.

Lately, I have been playing on the PS3. Have to say that I still don't like the controller much....you just can't beat a keyboard and mouse.

That said, I was in the top 18K in the world for straight kills on COD4 on the PS3 at one point. Not bad considering 2M plus players. Have to say that I've slipped back a bit as I've not been playing much as I found I'd have to do at least 4 hours a night just to maintain my position!
