NAS's and Squeezebox Duet or Classic

Hi

I may of asked this question before but didn't get a proper reply, so apologies in advance if i have.

I had settled on a Qnap TS-101 NAS which I would be able to install Squeeze box's Slimserver software but it seems to have stop being made as i cannot find anymore. Most, if not all sites selling them says unavailable and not sure when or if they will be getting anymore. so i've settle back on my original option which was the Maxtor Shared Storage 2 1TB which for £180 seems too good a deal to miss. However Slimeserver is not sold pre-installed on it and reading the latest edition of WHF, the LaCie (500gb) has become a contender.

Can slimserver be installed once i receive the Maxtor or LaCie? I know a man that can if possible.
LaCie NAS - can it be sold with slimserver pre-install?

I did think about the the Qnap TS109 but for the same about of storage space, i'm practically paying double the price of Maxtor and LaCie. I also notice that you WHF hadn't mention it at all - why?

I strongly recommend that you do NOT buy the Maxtor Shared Storage II. I had 3 of these go west on me, all within a month of receipt, before I got my money back. I found it to be a very unreliable device, and since it is a sealed box you can't even swap out a hard disk.

I would go down the empty box route and buy your own hard disks to install in it. I now use a Linksys NAS 200, which lacks gigabit ethernet, and is quite slow when transferring files on it initially, but in practice works fine when serving up music. I don't think you can install slimserver on it though.

You might also consider a Windows Home Server such as the Tranquil PC T7 HSAi.

Thanks Mr Orange, I didn't know the maxtor are sealed. No good if i can't replace the drive myself.
The Tranquil PC T7 HSAi does exceeds my budget but it is definitley worth condsidering. I think you are right with the empty box route. At least this way i can source a good hard drive for less than the manufacturer price for installing it and the software I'm sure i can pick up a decent one at my local computer fair.

thanks all

I have the TS101 and although I have the Squeezecenter software running, it isnt supported yet, and is a ballache to install.

(You need the Squeezecenter 7 software, and NOT the slimserver software for compatibility with the Squeezebox Duet)

These could be an option... but I haven't looked into it so I am not certain.
