What kind of music is it, Jan?

It's rock music, but if you would be more precise one could categorise it as 'Math-rock' (basically rock music with complex timings like 7/8 and 11/8. It (can) also make use of alot of dissonants. It's also somewhat post-rock'ish, in the vein of bands like Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky and Don Cabbalero. It's very different and refreshing to listen to. Not to mention that it also sounds very good on a more upscale system. If you like I could send an MP3 your way.

Re: What are you listening to?

Ignore that last one then! Manchester, oop north, UK. You've mentioned a few bands above that I'm particularly keen on, would you care to mention any others? It's fairly hard to come across some of the less well known post-rockers, so i would love to hear your favourites (or any genre for that matter)

If it's math-rock/post rock you want to explore, then I highly recommend 65daysofstatic, Rodan (very similar to Slint) June Of 44, Shellac, Chavez and Drive Like Jehu. Some post rock: Godspeed You! Black Emperor, The Evpatoria Report (amazing Swiss post rock, not well known but certainly worth a listen) Sigur Ros (very well know, but still very good), Do Make Say Think, Pelican, Mono.

other favourites include: Pavement (Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is simply amazing), Built To Spill, Sonic Youth (Daydream Nation is mandatory listening), Dinosaur Jr. and a million others. I could go on forever and ever, but these are pretty much essentials if you ask me.

Re: What are you listening to?

Cheers Jan! I'm quite a long way down the line with post-rock and have got albums by most of those but math-rock is a new one to me so I'll be taking a closer look at Rodan, June of 44, Shellec, Chavez and Drive Like Jehu... and The Evpatoria Report, all of which I've never heard of. Many thanks!

Space isn't remote at all. It's only an hour's drive away if your car could go straight upwards
