Re: Any photographers out there?

Agree with the glass argument. I use an aged Nikon D100 with a Sigma Bigma 50-500mm for aircraft photography and the results I get are superb. A faster body would be nice though...

Not sure about the full frame argument. What is it you're trying to achieve over a cropped sensor?

Re: Any photographers out there?

This forum says yes http://photo.net/canon-eos-digital-camera-forum/00NpLD however the simplicity and cost of the Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II at 60 quid probably outweighs any saving on the adaptor.

The 50 is the most optically simple lens to create, hence great results at low cost. I bought a 50 f1.8 mk1 years ago and it finally died recently, so I upgraded to the 50 f1.4 whilst in the states and the dollar was at 2.10

Nikon have a similar lens in their catalog, for about 15 quid more, they are very useful for low light shooting too. Low light = inside with a 100w of overhead lighting =)

Lack of obsolescence, primarily, though the results from the colleague's 5D I borrowed were stunning - whether this is because I had more pixels to play with, better focussing, different DOF, better glass (a 24-70 in this case), I don't know. I just think it's the way things are going so am hesitant to buy another cropped body or more short-focus lenses.

If your needs are primarily long telephoto though (mine are not), it's a slightly different argument, since I acknowledge you can achieve the same effect with smaller and lighter glass.

Re: Any photographers out there?

The 5D has a beautiful look, partly due to the size of the sensor cells, they are huge on the 5D compared to other full frame sensors with many more pixels. Many people describe the 5D as film like. I'd be tempted to get one off ebay as people upgrade to newer bodies.

Also the 24-70 is a glorious piece of glass, one of the nicest lenses Canon make, my brother in law, a music photographer, has both of these and they make lovely pictures. Proper professional kit, very nice to work with.

Yes considering that once the Mk2 is in the shops and people dump their perfectly excellent old kit (cf my stereo).

Well....

I've been looking around and found this http://www.jessops.com/Store/s75429/0/Digital-SLRs/Nikon/D80-%2b-18-55mm-VR-Lens-kit/details.aspx?&IsSearch=y&pageindex=1&CatId=481&ManIds=1462,&SortBy=SkuOfferingPriceASC&IsInStockOnly=False&comp=y

Is this a bit of a bargain? Even though now replaced by the D90, the price seems pretty good to me.

Any thoughts gents?

Re: Any photographers out there?

seems reasonable, do go and try it out to see if the size / user interface works for you, that does seem to be a keen price.

have fun

It's a reasonable price, but you can get the more up-to-date Canon 450D for more or less the same. the Nikon is better built, the image quality on the Canon better at high ISO if that matters to you (though frankly compared to high speed film of the past digital cameras walk all over them, don't know what the fuss is about), the Nikon probably has more 'pop' straight out of the camera, though they will be more or less equal if you shoot RAW and post-process.

You should try both the D80 and the 450D and see which one feels better to you - both would give you sterling service.

Re: Any photographers out there?

just ordered my 1000d last night (should arrive tomorrow). Mainly because i'm fed up with the rubbish manual focus on my s5600fd. I really like the 400d my g/f has, but i dont think there is any benefit getting the 450d, in fact after reading a couple of reviews it seems the extra pixels in the 450d actually makes it worse at higher iso's

I now need to get a decent zoom, so am considering the sigma dg apo 70-300 and the canon 75-300 usm mk3. Does any one have any experience with these?

Cheers

i've seen that one before, very funnyBig Smile

i don't have much experience of the cheaper end of the d-slr market (being a d2x owner).  but i would be tempted to get a superseded model and spend the money saved on decent lenses.

Did you find anything?

The g/f and i both ordered canon 75-300 III usm lenses on sat after trying them against the sigma and tamron offerings. Breaking the bank this month but i'm sure it'll be worth it in the long run.

Re: Any photographers out there?

Well, after much deliberation (spent about an hour and a half in Jessops yesterday), I came out with an EOS 1000D, 18-55 kit lens and a deal on a Tamron 70-300 F4-5.6. Now I just need to RTFM.Geeked

No no no, the manual is for wusses - just take any issues you're having with it to the dpreview forums, I'm sure you'll get a warm welcome.
