If there was any justice in the world all the Elvis impersonators would be dead and the king would be alive....

The 'rubbish' was mischief, pure and simple. I'm looking for objective views...........

OK, how about this.

Elvis was the first person to popularise the mix of white country and black blues that came to be known as rock and roll. This opened up worlds of music previously taboo to both sides of a cultural divide. There were others doing the same thing, but he was the one (with the help of Col Parker) who made this heady mix widely available to a new generation with increasing financial independence. That is why, in cultural terms, he is great.

The fact that he had a great voice can almost be considered a happy by-product in this context.

Drummerdave - but Motorhead's often just fast Elvis!! I defy anyone to say Elvis couldn't have done a version of "Going To Brazil"....!

Well - yes, modern rock music all stemmed from rhythm & blues / rock n roll, but Elvis wan't the first to do it

The Stones and - latterly - The Who were always much better than The Beatles.

Hold that thought...

Re: Elvis is Rubbish

Even if you hate Elvis' music (which is an odd statement, being as it varies so incredibly, encapsulating a wide range of genres), it can't be ignored that the man had passion, and put his heart and soul into even the throwaway tracks he (too often - thanks Col Parker) sang.

That's what I love in a singer - the sense that they're feeling the words, the meaning of a song. They may not have written the song, but they can often better realise the songwriter's intentions than you'd imagine, and/or raise something quite ordinary into the extraordinary.

There were and are more technically adept or lyrically sophisticated performers around, but so often they leave you cold as there isn't that emotion...

Re: Elvis is Rubbish

Here is a question and please be honest. How many of you have played an Elvis song via vinyl/cd/mp3/etc., in the last 6 months??

I would never be so pig headed as to say he was rubbish - I can't be right and everyone else wrong - however, there is not one song of his that I have even the slightest inclination of listening to over any number of songs at my disposal.

And Andrew, please include one of your famous "imho" when saying that the Stones and the Who were better than Ringo and Co. The Stones produced some corkers as did the Who but overall I prefer the Beatles. Can any of these lot touch the songs of Radiohead though? In Rainbows as shocked me by even bettering Ok Computer.

Re: Elvis is Rubbish

If Presley looked like Worzel Gummidge [or me]Crying would he of been the icon he is today? I think I know the answer to that.

Course, it's down to taste, personally I only buy music based purely on the MUSIC, not image.
