It's in this month's issue of WHF magazine so will probably be uploaded to the site soonish.

Re: Denon AVR 1909 review

I am planning to buy the 1909 tomorrow and would love to know what the review said, but my bookstores do not have the latest issue of the magazine. Can someone give me the gist of the review: how it stacked up against the Yamaha and Onkyo and the overall star rating?

Thanks. . .

Well, Clare has already pointed out it won the group test and I've already mentioned it getting 5 stars...

Re: Denon AVR 1909 review

Here's an extract from the Group Test verdict, which you'll only read in the mag (though the individual product reviews will be up online in the next week or so)

"Denon has emerged to snatch victory..but not without effort, however, and the improvements in the AVR-1909 over its predecessor have had to be of the fundamental variety.

Onkyo can take heart from the fact that Denon has had to meet it halfway: it's the addition of TX-SR606-esque drive that makes the AVR-1909 such a strong contender, but the Denon's extra richness and refinement (which is just as apparant when listening to music as to movies) that makes it the more enjoyable listen."

Onkyo retains 5 stars; Denon 5 stars and test win; Yamaha DSP-AX563 four stars.

Now that the September issue's been on sale for a couple of days, I'll post the Denon AVR-1909 review in full on the site later this evening.

I'm afraid you won't be able to buy a 1909 for quite a while. The first stocks are not expected to reach the UK until the end of August !

Gerrardasnails:
An excellent review but for me a flaw in it as with the Onkyo 606 review. Now I've gone on about this before but I really don't understand the reluctance to mention the LACK OF PRE OUTS!! We've had the award winning Onkyo 605 - fair enough it had HD audio and no other receiver in it's price range did. However now, most of the £350 - £500 receivers have HD audio and surely pre outs or lack of should be mentioned. What is particularly annoying with the 1909 is that the 1908 it superceded has got pre outs (just no HD decoding). Is it now down to the Sony 2400 to give us HD audio, upscaling, upconverting and pre outs - all for under £500. Will it get 6 stars??

Newbie question: What are pre outs? And how do they impact the overall sound quality? Is it a deal breaker? Thanks.

Thanks. Do I understand this correctly? The preamps will allow you to connect the AV Receiver to yet another Amp before connecting to the speakers? Why would you do that? Isn't the AV Receiver good enough to drive the speakers or wouldn't you just buy a better/more powerful AV Receiver rather than using a separate amp?

So you can run a separate purist stereo system with your CD player connected through that for optimum musical performance, while avoiding the need to keep changing speaker connections

Even the really expensive av receivers like the Onkyo 905 will not be as good as say a £500 stereo amp. The receivers in the 1909 bracket are brilliant for surround sound but not the best with cd playback. There are a lot of people - like me - who have their stereo amp connected to the front left and right speakers used in a 5.1 system. You cannot connect a pair of speakers to two different amps so the alternative is to connect them to your stereo amp and the remaining speakers (rear, centre and subwoofer) to your receiver. This way you can listen to music using your stereo amp and when watching films etc, you have both switched on.

Re: Denon AVR 1909 review

Now THIS is substantially superb news. At last, a manufacturer has taken on Onkyo and, like them, seen that there's a volume business at that end of the market. Who'da thunk it'd be Denon, though?
I take back all the Onk/conspiracy theory rubbish I posted (and thought). Your review (of the Denon) was wholly objective and music to my - and many other people's - ears.
Now I've never used pre-outs and never would (now that Andrew's told me what they do), so the lack of them on the Denon's no great shakes to me.
I will wait for a review of the Sony, and buy in September/October, but it looks like I'm going all Denon...
