NEWS: Virgin Media looks to bring back Sky

Virgin

After changes at the top at both Sky and Virgin Media, it looks like the two could be on the verge of patching up their differences and returning Sky channels to Virgin Media subscribers.

Programmes such as Lost, 24 and of course the mighty Gladiators have been off-air to Virgin customers, but with reports of recent dialogue between the companies, the Sky channels may be set to return.

The two subscription services came to blows over pricing last year, leading Sky to take its ball away. Happily, the two companies could well be playing merrily again, which would be great news for Virgin Media consumers.

Could it be that the recent Freesat announcements have given the pair of them something to think about?

about bloody time too. I made the great choice if virgin last year had it installed in 4 rooms then they announced that they were dropping sky!!. Do you know if sky's hd channels will be available as well??

haider May 12, 2008 16:24

all hail the virgins in the sky..well if one could actually get them to come and install their gubbins!

The problem with Virgin Media is they cant be bothered to grab new customers even if the cables run directly outside their homes! The residents of Guildford for example breath fire and spit venom as they utter the name. Having endured the slight discomfort of their roads being trenched it seems that Virgin simply cant muster the energy to actually connect to the houses! Well thats the word on the street anyway. Me being street savy an all, what what!

I never watch Lost, 24 or "the mighty" Gladiators and haven't really missed Sky much at all. For me I guess this will just mean a price rise.

Generally I am happy with the entertainment-per-pound that VM offers me. I suppose I'd like to see more HD films (PPV/VOD) - but that's about it.

I cant remember receiving a price cut when virgin dropped sky so i cant see them increasing the price either. Forgive me if im wrong. I hope they bring it back in time for the end of season 4, its shaping up to be rather nice.

Joe,

why so little mention of VM and, more specifically the V+ box, in the pages of WhatHiFi?. SkyHD seems to be the only HD STB that has been reviewed. I think the V+ is excellent value for money!

What a tease of an article! It says a lot, without saying anything at all. When? How? Will us virgins get HD?

More details ASAP please. The above just leaves questions!

Thanks, though, as it is promising!

Virgin media? I gave up campaigning to get them up our street ages ago!

Sky? Wouldn't give them any money!

Freesat? Jury is out until PVRs and more channels.

So - freeview it is then...

Virgin Media...? Who they...?

darkside82 May 12, 2008 21:16

lost intrest in lost once virgin dropped sky its just all hype

Joe Cox May 13, 2008 10:48

Higgy,

A quick search of our website certainly shows that we have been giving Virgin Media plenty of coverage, with more news stories than Sky as it happens.

Sky is likely to get more mentions in reviews simply as we use it far more often as a reference HD source due to the amount of content available. It's fair to say it beats Virgin Media comfortably here. We also covered the Virgin Media box in the HD TV supplement free with the April issue.

As soon as we hear any more information on this story we will of course update you.

higgy May 13, 2008 11:10

Hi Joe,

reading the magazine (I am a subscriber), apart from the HD supplement (where you could hardly ignore it!) the V+ has had next to nothing written about it. There's no review and no mention in the buyers guide. I guess, strictly speaking it can't be bought, but it's still an HD STB choice and there aren't many of those!

We have reviewed Virgin's HD offering - we gave it four stars: will look into why that rating isn't in the Buyer's Guide.

We also cover Virgin in every HD feature we do, whether in main mag, supplement or Ultimate Guides.

Thanks folks!

Casca May 14, 2008 09:38

Virgin's On-Demand/Catch up service is actually rather good (when it works). Oddly, there's a good deal of HD material there (Lost seasons 2 & 3 for example) but it all seems to live in different places on their irritating EPG. Someone high up at VM (reading this Mr Webb?) should pull their flashy finger out, rearrange it (ie bring it all together in one HD section) and start making a noise about the amount of HD they actually do have available to their increasingly ****** off subs. It might actually be something of a PR positive, instead of the usual PR faux pas they usually go for.

SAP7 May 26, 2008 16:46

Casca is right... the on demand thing is mad. Too many menus and too much stuff spread about. Condense it all into one menu! PLEASE. e.g. why is Lost in one HD menu, and not another! Madness
