Grand Theft Auto IV - my five cents

Gta Iv 4
It's here. You've got it, we've got it, and everyone's tired from playing the game, rather than doing less-important things like eat, sleep and work. So, here's my verdict on the most anticipated game in the history of everything, writes Tom Parsons.

By the way, it's the Xbox 360 version that I've been playing, but we've also had a look at the Playstation 3 version, and graphically, there's very little between them.

The step-forward that Rockstar has taken in terms of presentation is evident from the very beginning. As the opening credits are slickly integrated into the opening scene, it's immediately clear that you're looking at something that has more in common with a Hollywood blockbuster than a traditional console game.

This is a feeling that continues for the duration of Grand Theft Auto IV. The story is deep and involving, the characters are multi-layered, and the voice-acting is spot-on. Your own character, Niko Bellic, is especially interesting. At first, I wasn't entirely convinced that I'd be able to really relate to him, but as his motives are revealed, and he suffers the emotional consequences of his (your) life of crime, it's impossible not to feel that you're part of him.

Gta Iv 2

Of course, this level of immersion would be impossible if the graphics and sound were below-par, but the good news is that both are very impressive indeed. The hi-def picture is excellent, whether you've got your Xbox 360 pumping out the game's native 720p picture, or upscaling it to 1080p. The city is dark and dinghy in the run-down districts, and bright and vibrant in the suburbs and at the beach. This is the most realistic representation of a city yet seen in gaming. The character models are equally impressive, showing plenty of detail and some quite exceptional body and face animation.

A flatscreen TV with decent black levels and insight will really help to get the picture looking its best. However, if you're having any trouble making out the details in darkened rooms or on the street at night, it is possible to adjust the brightness and contrast from the game's option menus.

The sound in GTA IV is a real achievement too, and really rewards those with a decent surround sound system. The incidental noises of Liberty City surround you constantly, and truly transport you to a living, breathing city. You can even tell the game whether your surround speakers are to the sides or behind your seating position, and it tailors positional sound effects to match.

Gta Iv 1

As mentioned, the voice-acting is excellent, though I did find myself having to turn the sound effects and music down a little, as the speech seemed to get a little lost when using the default settings. Doing this saved me from having to turn the atmosphere-killing subtitles on.

Now, while our primary concern as a magazine is with picture and sound performance, I simply can't write about a console game without giving opinion on the playability, and the good news is that Rockstar hasn't messed-up here either. I'll admit that at first I was surprised and worried about the car handling - driving just didn't seem to work as I felt it should. However, once I stopped driving how I expected a game to want me to, and started to approach driving more like it was real-life, it all came together rather nicely. This quest for realism is admirable, and it also extends to how Nico travels on foot. At first he seems slow and ponderous, but you quickly realise that this is simply a result of him being firmly constructed using real-world physics.

Gta Iv 3

Those who are worried about the new seriousness and darkness in Grand Theft Auto IV needn't be. There are still jokes, filthy words, explosions and ridiculous gun battles aplenty. It's simply that these things are routed to a more three-dimensional character, and a deeper, more realistic story and game-world.

I guess that what I'm trying to say is that you can safely believe all the hype - Grand Theft Auto IV is one of the greatest and most accomplished games of all time.

this is actually the first GTA i like ;)

loading times and pop-in are lower on the PS3, besides that they are 100% the same.

A worthy review of an incredible accomplishment.  Grand Theft Auto should be nominated for an Oscar!

Funnily enough, I was going to start a thread on GTA tomorrow (once everyone had got into it) - don't need to now. It is a great game isn't it?! I had my reservations once I started playing as well, but once you get into it and get used to the controls, it's wonderful. Last night, while I ate dinner (in the real world) I was watching the TV in the GTA world - that's how immersive it is, there are TV channels and the shows are hilarious!

I played in the free for all Mutiplayer mode with a friend as well and, once we stopped killing each other and just wandering around the city, you see how huge it is. It's an incredible achievement. Best moments so far, swooping through the skyscrapers in an attack helicopter high above the city and pulling off an awesome handbrake turn in the Times Square rip off part of Liberty City in an Aston Martin Vanquish. Sweet!

Rub it in you lot!!

I preordered mine too late to get it on release date so have to wait while friday :(

To top it all I actually had the game in my sweaty hand when they snatched it away sayiong "Oops sorry but your preorder does'nt get you it for release day , you missed the cut off point by a day".

I left Blockbuster and knelt on the floor shaking my fist at the heavens screaming " WHY GOD WHY??"

The folks coming out of Greggs looked a little perplexed.

Probably won't help to say I didn't have a pre-order at all and managed to pick it up in Game at Victoria Station at 8am Tuesday morning....

BTW the Xbox 360 version has no mandatory 10 minute installation to sit through before you can play game.

However that being said, there are no annoying loading screens on the PS3 version after the install.

Both the Xbox 360 version and the PS3 version suffer from the same minor framerate issues.

The PS3 version has better anti aliasing (less jaggies) & more realistic colour palette than the Xbox version.

However the Xbox 360 version has better colour saturation, and this can be adjusted via your TV's colour settings for a far more realistic look.

The Xbox 360 pad also supports that lovely rumbling sensation you get when things go BOOM, The Sony PS3 sixaxis pad doesn't.

You wont have to folk out another £30 - £40 for a Sony dualshock 3 pad to get that rumbling sensation when it finally hits the UK.

You can use the Sony PS3 sixaxis to steer helicoptors & speedboats.

The Xbox 360 has better online network support, even though you have to pay a small subscription for it.

(its worth paying for over Sony's poorly supported but free PSN)

The Xbox 360 has exclusive DLC episodes coming out that the PS3 will never get.

So there you have it, the choice is yours you decide!

Very good run down on the differences between versions - thanks Sams Son. I entirely concur with what you've said. The two versions are so close to each other overall, that if you have both consoles, I'd simply suggest buying the one that your mates are playing. That was exactly what swayed my decision in choosing the Xbox version.

It is the best game since Occarina of time.

That says a hell of a lot about how GTA IV plays and feels.

Another winner for Rockstar! oh, I almost forgot, my social life is dead for awhile :-)

Hello Tom. That's a damn fine review, though, I get the impression you may have spent quite a lot of time 'testing' this software - would you like me to send you some speakers to test? Or maybe a nice, spec-heavy AV amp? Oh, and can I just check that you are 100% aware that GTA isn't part of the real world? At least, I don't think it is.....

Sams Son May 1, 2008 23:35

@ Tom Parsons, thank you my friend for the inspiration LOL.

BTW this will shock some folks...

& please google it if you are an unbeliever.

The PS3 version runs @ 640p not native 720p so its technically not even really HD.

The 360 supports true 720p, 1080i, 1080p modes

Told ya it would shock ya!!!

Hi Sams Son. Yeah, we've read/heard the same thing, but there's been no official confirmation from anyone. Just seems to be rumour and speculation right now. We're trying to get a comment from Rockstar, but perhaps unsurprisingly they don't seem eager to spill the beans. Will let you know if we get an answer from them.
