The Week in HD 18th-24th April

Matrix

Good afternoon HD fans! As the end of the working week approaches us, it's time to pick out the hi-def highlights of the next seven days, writes Tom Parsons.

As always, if you agree or disagree with my picks, or simply want to suggest something that I've missed, just make a comment below.

Friday 18th April

In terms of movies, tonight's top-pick has got to be sci-fi classic The Matrix (Sky Screen 1HD, 8.00pm). If you've not seen it before, it really is terrific (just don't bother with the sequels), and if you've already seen it on DVD, the added HD visuals should be enough to convince you to watch it again.

If you don't fancy sci-fi, the love-it-or-hate-it The Da Vinci Code (Sky Screen 2HD, 9.00pm) is the most obvious alternative. Unless of course, you're sticking with the quite brilliant new series Dirty Sexy Money (Channel 4 HD, 9.00pm).

On the games front there's little to shout about. EA has released UEFA Euro 2008 on both the Xbox 360 and PS3, but that's your lot I'm afraid.

Saturday 19th April

Today's HD content kicks-off with Arsenal v. Reading (Sky Sports HD1, 12.30pm), and continues with a boat-load of decent movies. Take your pick this evening between Last King of Scotland (Sky Screen 2HD, 9.00pm), Talladega Nights (Sky Screen 1HD, 9.30pm), and the criminally overlooked Shawshank Redemption (Channel 4 HD, 9.05pm).

Sunday 20th April

It's football all the way today, with Newcastle v. Sunderland (Sky Sports HD1, 1.00pm) and Man City v. Portsmouth (Sky Sports HD1, 3.30pm) both likely to provide some thrills.

Monday 21st April

Tonight's fairly quiet in terms of TV movies, but I Am Legend is released on Blu-ray. There's a little bit of debate around the office with regards to how good the film really is, but I fall on the side that thinks it's great, and it simply cannot be denied that it's a stunning advert for Blu-ray, as the picture and soundtrack are both exceptional.

Tuesday 22nd April

There are no decent films on tonight, but that's probably for the best, as they'd only be competing with the wonderful Battlestar Galactica (Sky One HD, 9.00pm). The only problem is that after the last two weeks of feature-length installments, we've got to make do with single episodes from this point on. Still, given the level of intensity this series provides, perhaps that's wise!

Wednesday 23rd April

Tonight sees Man U take on Barcelona at the Nou Camp in the first leg of their Champions League semi final (Sky Sports HD2, 7.00pm).

Thursday

Heroes returns with two episodes tonight (BBC HD, 9.00pm and 10.30pm), so if you've been wondering what happened to Peter Petrelli at the end of season 1, the wait is nearly over.

If you're not a fan of the superhero show, how about Bobby (Sky Screen 2HD, 7.00pm) or Blood Diamond (Sky Screen 2HD, 11.00pm) instead?

Now Tom, let's get this straight: I Am Legend is NOT a great film – it's pants! And this from the man who had a dig at Torchwood!

Tom Parsons April 18, 2008 17:19

Well, someone who likes Torchwood is bound to dislike good films! Oooooh!

Cofnchtr April 18, 2008 18:33

Hi,

15 all - I'll hold your coats!!

Would rather watch all the films mentioned than Torchwood though.

Cheers,

ofn.

tvmog April 18, 2008 19:55

How come you never mention "Mad Men", the American drama series about the advertising industry, shown on BBC HD when it is repeated at 11:20 Tuesdays on BBC 2. Excellent drama and excellent HD photography.

darkside82 April 18, 2008 20:57

i agree with tom that i am leagend is a great film but come on matrix 2 is great too maybe the storyline is abit allover the place but the non stop action makes up for that [apart from the long dancing scene and thats what the skip button on your remote is for!]

Paulthefilmfan April 18, 2008 21:05

I love the look, but that's where the love ends.

Bullseye April 18, 2008 23:14

Watched the matrix tonight. Looked great but I cannot wait to see it on BD.

Andy Clough April 19, 2008 13:15

Mad Men, now you're talking - that is a good series. Maybe Tom and I will agree on that one!

bullitt April 19, 2008 14:12

The matrix should not be seen as three films ,its one story ,If all three were made as one film(AN EPIC) im sure most matrix fans would say it was a great film,i think that all three are good,Im looking fwd to this in hd format.

Tom Parsons April 19, 2008 16:40

tvmog, to be honest, I haven't actually seen Mad Men - I know, shame on me! I'll endeavour to see it this week...

As for the Matrix, I'm afraid it should be seen as three separate films. If you look at it as one massive epic, the first, brilliant third is simply brought down by the self-indeulgent and poorly judged second and third parts. At least treating the first as a single entity gives the viewer one, truly amazing sci-fi film.

My own theory is that if all three parts had been filmed at the same time, the trilogy would be way more consistent, interesting and worthy. As it is, the Wachowskis were able to absorb the reaction the first part received, and went into the second and third parts over-confident and over-funded. Even they are guilty of believing their own hype.

bullitt April 19, 2008 19:22

I totally disagree that its three seperate films because totally related and continue from where they left off,When it came to the end of the first and second part it left you wanting more ,If you were watching lets say lost or heroes although its a series you dont say the 1st part was better than the 8th its a story from start to finnish, like lord of the rings etc..and what i like about matrix is the meaning and many interptretations .

Zombunny April 20, 2008 00:33

still waiting on a matrix blu-ray boxset but why ow why watch torchwood, just stick with the lame doctor who

DLeslie April 20, 2008 10:56

For those with an Xbox 360 at their disposal (and a fast, unlimited broadband connection) - the Matrix is also available in HD720 from Marketplace.

DLeslie April 20, 2008 10:59

Tom - I agree with your points about the trilogy 110% - is as if the original plot outline was trashed in favour of a more 'hollywood' type of sci-fi flick for the second and third film.  I was extremely disappointed with the disjointed storyline.

Volcane April 20, 2008 21:05

I always though The Matrix sequels were the worst since the Highlander franchise took a nosedive... and then the Pirates of the Carribbean sequels came along!

Tom Parsons April 21, 2008 11:41

Well, if we're moving on to atrocious sequels, I'd like to give a big shout out to Jurassic Park 2 & 3! What a waste of what could have been an incredible franchise. And don't even get me started on Spiderman 3!

dominic dawes April 21, 2008 12:01

Agreed, both Matrix 2 and 3 failed to live up to the considerable promise of the first movie. But while the storytelling fell apart (causing the third movie to be an absolutely irredeemable pile of rhubarb), I've got to say the second movie has its charm in terms of action etc. The fight scene between Whatshisface and the French bloke's henchmen is one of the best martial arts sequences I've ever seen. Plus the car chase... etc.... Gawd, I can't believe I'm on here defending the Matrix trilogy.

You can unplug me now.

jimmyswizzle April 21, 2008 16:47

Im waiting on the Bourne films on Blu Ray :) Are they making a 4th film, iv heard that they are but i wasnt to sure if it was in a dream!!!

darkside82 April 21, 2008 22:19

here here on spiderman 3

absolutely awful

Murdo Mathewson April 22, 2008 12:00

Until we get two more Planes, Trains & Automobiles, there is an unbearable void in my own personal Sequels World - HD or not HD. Mr Hughes may struggle to fill the Del Griffith role, mind....
