NEWS UPDATE: More details about the demise of HD DVD coming shortly...

Andy Clough 19 February 2008 10:57

The big story this morning is Toshiba's decision to pull the plug on HD DVD. To keep you bang up to date with what's happening, we've got a telephone interview booked at 11.30am with Olivier van Wynendaele, Toshiba's deputy general manager of HD DVD Europe.

We'll be asking him how Toshiba plans to look after the one million people who've already bought HD DVD players, what Universal and Paramount – the last two Hollywood studios supporting the format – will do, and whether Toshiba will now start making Blu-ray players.

If you've got any other questions you'd like us to ask him, post them as a reply to this story. We'll post an update on the site as soon as we've finished the interview.

Can you please ask what's going to happen about all the Toshiba laptops that've got HD DVD drives? Will they stop selling them, too? I've been thinking about buying one of their multimedia laptops for some time, and sense there could be bargains to be had!

As a supporter of HD DVD all i can say at the moment to Toshiba is, if you cant beat em join em.

We only needed one format anyway and unfortunately the Sony hype machine still manages to convince the masses.

In the interim, will HD DVD players have their prices reduced any further? I'm thinking they could be a bargain stop gap buy to watch upscaled DVDs. That is until blue ray players have come down to the same sort of price backet which might take a while!!

"How long will movies continue to be released on hd dvd?"

No official announcement yet, but we're chasing Paramount and Universal for a statement.

PiperUK February 19, 2008 12:42

£79.99?! Gutted.

johnnyboyyo February 19, 2008 12:47

EP30 for £79.99??? As far as I am concerned for it's DVD upscaling abilities alone it's a bargain.

PiperUK February 19, 2008 13:04

Yeah, but I paid £120 less than two weeks ago.

johnnyboyyo February 19, 2008 13:30

And I paid £200 in December. At the time I thought it was excellent value, as it came with 7 HD DVDs all of which I wanted. I bought a Samsung upscaling in 2006 for £150 and the Toshiba is much better at upscaling DVDs. I think I got a good deal. Don't whine, PiperUK, you got a great deal. Enjoy it.
