NEWS: Dixons calls for a swift end to the Blu-ray/HD DVD format war

Dixons.co.uk is urging manufacturers and film studios to bring a swift end to the battle between Blu-ray and HD DVD.

deVere Forster, director of e-commerce at Dixons.co.uk, says: "Customers are confused about the benefits of one format over another and which films they will be able to view as the different studios decide to go exclusively with one format or another.

"They want to know which way the market is going to go so that they do not waste their money by investing in the wrong market. For the sake of our customers, we hope the decision will come soon."

Dixons.co.uk asked its customers in an online poll which format they preferred: 53 percent said Blu-ray, 47 percent said HD DVD.

"The results, far from being decisive, show that it is all still to play out there," says Forster. "While the big boys are fighting it out for supremacy, our customers are very much straight down the middle, and whichever way it goes, half of them will be disappointed."

  • In a separate development, Currys, Dixons and PC World have announced they will stop stocking analogue televisions, and will instead promote integrated sets with built-in digital Freeview tuners.

"Blu -ray!" shouted Sony. "HD DVD!" shouted Toshiba. "Yes, please makes your minds up, we want to spend our hard-earned cash on another format and throw away all our DVDs." shouted almost nobody at all.

Just a though -  a hybrid player 'supermarket special' would get the big guns worried!

Don't buy untill it is settled! I know, the pearls are shiny.

The same issue years ago between VHS and Betamax.

If customers could unite and say to the industry," we don't buy untill you have made up your mind about the new format", wow then it goes fast.

For sure many customers are already in that camp but not enough.
