HOW TO... Make the most of your PS3

Andrew Everard 23 October 2007 12:18

PS3For many buyers, the Sony PlayStation 3 looks like an ideal way to get into Blu-ray, especially now prices have been cut a bit to make it even more attractive. The standard-issue UK version gets a 60GB hard-disk, with a stripped-down 40GB model also available, and onto this you can record audio files from your CDs.

But the crucial feature here is the Blu-ray transport built-in, and an an HDMI output, which supports both 1080p video and uncompressed Linear PCM multichannel audio. There's a lot more to it than gaming...

And provded you have the latest firmware, it'll upscale existing DVDs to 1080p, too - and do so very well indeed. In fact all we need now is the ability to send the new HD audio formats, from Dolby and DTS, down the HDMI to the latest-generation AV receivers. However, rumours abound that such capability is coming soon, along with add-ons designed to make the PS3 the hub of your TV viewing, due next year.

So how do you make the most of all this capability?

Round the back of the console, you'll find an HDMI output, with which you can use any make of cable you like, including established favourites such as those from QED and Chord; if you'd rather use a specialist PS3-branded cable, Monster was the first to hit the shelves, its range including both optical digital and HDMI cables.

And when it comes to picture quality, the PS3 can detect what resolution your TV can accept, and set itself up to deliver the maximum possible. Navigate through to display settings, select '1080p' and run the test screen. If you can see a picture, then you're in Full HD business.

Sounds like the future
The Blu-ray disc drive doesn't just bring improvements in picture performance: it also allows access to new audio formats, ensuring your sonic experience is better all round.

There's a wealth of audio options, offering 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1 ability, as well as access to multichannel PCM (uncompressed) sound. The PS3 was the first Blu-ray player we encountered with an HDMI 1.3 output, in theory giving it the ability to send Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD, plus DTS-HD and Master Audio, to a suitable decoder, such as those found in some of the latest receivers.

However, as yet the PS3 only outputs these soundtracks in Linear PCM - up to four streams, each carrying two channels of high-resolution uncompressed audio - via its HDMI output, with internal decoders crunching the HD Dolby and DTS into Linear PCM form.

As already mentioned, it's thought upgrades to allow native HD output from those discs provided with Dolby and DTS HD soundtracks are on the way, maybe in the next rounds of downloadable firmware.

The optical alternative
So what happens if your existing receiver can't take HD audio via HDMI? Well, the Sony also includes an optical digital output, which can send out the more conventional surround sound formats we all know and love.

Make your way through the console settings, and then to audio settings, and you will see support for everything from Dolby Digital Stereo, to Dolby Digital 5.1 and standard DTS, on the screen below.

Thanks Andrew for the article. It still seems strange to me to read about gaming machines in home cinema and hifi magazines, yet I have just purchased a PS3 for the very reasons you have written about  -  a really good Blu-ray player/upscaler that just happens to play games!

My new Pioneer 42incher arrives in a couple of weeks so both the PS3 and Sony Dav-is10, along with my new tv stand, will remain in their boxes until the great day. Excited? - moi ? !!

In the meantime, a couple of questions. How will I know if the PS3 has the latest firmware? It arrived yesterday from Amazon. Also, what would be the best set-up for me to get the optimum perormance out of these three components?

Thanks again

David

PS This is my first surround system. I had to wait until it got that small (the Sony) before I could get away with it.

Hi David,

What a great system - no wonder you're excited....

When you first plug your PS3 and get its internet connectivity sorted, it should tell you if there's an outstanding Firmware upgrade, If it doesn't you can prompt it via System Settings. Full step-by-step guide in PlayStation 3 troubleshooting section at: uk.playstation.com/home

There are also instructions up there on how to handle the upgrades via USB stick if you're not planning to hook it up to the internet.

Re connectivity - buy yourself a couple of decent HDMI cables -  QED HDMI-P at the least (there are some good deals on this).

Clare Newsome October 23, 2007 14:45

Sorry, forgot to mention the optical cable you'll need to connect the PS3 up to the Sony surround system - Monster do a good selection for the PS3.

jphealy October 23, 2007 14:55

Would the optical cable be necessary to connect the PS3 to th Onkyo TX-SR705? Or is the HDMI alone sufficient?

Clare Newsome October 23, 2007 15:49

HDMI would be fine for the Onkyo receiver.

david1997 October 23, 2007 16:04

Thanks Clare. I quite forgot the SonyDav-is10) has no HDMI in. I know to some it seems strange me having 2 dvd sources but I needed a good surround sound amp and speakers that were tiny.

Clare Newsome October 23, 2007 16:46

The other advantage (depending on where you've bought it) is that the Sony DAV-IS10 is widely available in multiregion form - allowing you to play DVDs from around the world - whereas the PS3 appears resolutely region-coded as far as DVDs are concerned...

clare i got a Onkyo TXSR605 on the way and would like to take advantage of my ps3 ability to out put the dest format around sound wise so how meny hdmi do i need ?and is it better to go optica digital output

Ginder October 24, 2007 13:18

Sorry to spoil the party, but the PS3 faces extinction if it doesnt start concentrating on its priority...GAMING!!

mjs October 25, 2007 06:47

Yes,all well and good, but you have to select the correct audio stream from the disc being played, otherwise you just get the default.

joeyhoey October 25, 2007 13:12

Advice please Clare, I have PS3, 46" bravia x, upscaling dvd recorder, waiting on 5200es receiver (for extra hdmi in)  QED hdmi cables in place, but unsure of speaker system to go for. Recommendations?

gtorrini October 25, 2007 13:18

Hi - thanks all for the notes on this article, really helpful. I have a 40X Sony Bravia and a PS3. Now lookign to add some sound to this system and not sure what to pick. I like the latest DAV IS10, but dont like the cabling... is there any decent wireless option?

david1997 October 25, 2007 17:17

Took your advice, Clare and went shopping for some half decent hdmi cables and an optical to send the sound from the PS3 to the Dav-is10.

Having spent a small fortune in the past on interconnects for my HiFi I was pleasantly surprised with the advice I was given. As long as the connections are solid then £15 for a 1m optical cable will do just fine. It is the video signal that  I should concentrate on, I was told. With advice I purchased QED hdmi-p for the Dav-is Pioneer link and with the money 'saved' on the optical cable, was sold the QED hdmi-sr for the PS3(eg. Blu-ray) to Pioneer.

I am lucky in that none of my 'runs' are more than 1m, but it is all very un-HiFi for my thinking. But then again I  thought SCART was the dogs do-dars until now !!

I have just installed my ps3 with a 42 inch panasonic HDTV, but when I am watching BLU RAY DVD's the picture does not fill the screen. I am having to use zoom to get a larger picture.

Any ideas what i need to do?

mring October 28, 2007 23:58

I know for a fact that once nearly every receiver maker has their top to bottom products supporting HD-DTS/Dolby, Sony will enable it on the PS3.

currently their strategy is to treat the PS3 as a second class Blu-Ray citizen when it comes down to audio, as it's less important as high-end users should get a stand-alone player.

they are basically financing the PS3 via stand-alone players, and looking at their sale figures they are doing quite well in that area.

Hi Clare

I'm looking to buy a home cinema to go with my Loewe individual 40.

On the basis of your comments to David above I am thinking of getting the PS3 and Sony Dav-is10.

Will this work well with the Loewe? (I know it only has the one HDMI connection point) - if not, do you have any other suggestions please.

Thanks

Jono
