US speaker company Thiel is heading for the home cinema high-end with its compact PowerPoint 1.2 speakers, designed for mounting on ceilings or walls. Selling for £995 each, the 1.2s use a coaxial driver arrangement for optimum integration, and are designed to cover a wide area in multichannel or stereo installations.
Inside their solid cast aluminium housing, the speakers use a 16.5cm mid/bass unit with an anodised aluminium cone, at the centre of which sits a 25mm dome tweeter made from the same material. The tweeter's the same one used in the company's flagship 7.2 loudspeaker.
The angled enclosure is designed to minimise boundary effects when the speakers are installed, and give wider dispersion than conventional in-wall/in-ceiling designs.
The speakers have 89db/W/m sensitivity, measure 53cm long, 16.5cm deep and 30.5cm wide, and weigh just over 4.5kg. They're distributed in the UK by Symmetry.
