Wharfedale's Diamond 9.1s need no introduction: they're a five-star bargain. But a similar rating for a speaker package using four of these beauties is by no means a dead cert: you've still got to add a centre channel and subwoofer into the equation and there's no guarantee that they'll fit in without any problems.
In this system, Wharfedale uses the Diamond 9cs centre channel, which is basically a standard 9.1 speaker turned on its side, boasting the same curved cabinet and twin gold-plated binding posts, and fitted with an extra mid/bass driver. It slips effortlessly into the rest of the system and all the speakers promote excellent integration and an even tonal balance across the board.
The SW250 subwoofer is a sealed-box design with 250w amplifier and a 25cm Kevlar driver. It has a remote control, front display and four programmable presets so you can store different settings for music and movies.
Beauty is in the detail
Whether it’s a DVD soundtrack or your favourite CD, you'll be entertained by their pacey, lively and agile delivery. The speakers dredge up a stunning level of detail, especially at the top end.
During the heavy downpour in the opening chapters of Hellboy, the 9.1AV creates a fantastic sense of atmosphere and enthralling sense of realism enhanced by the system's astounding dynamics. Okay, so the Diamond 9.1s don't delve particularly deep, but thanks to the subwoofer you never feel that something is missing.
Whenever it's called into action, the SW250 delivers the goods. Low frequencies hit you with weight, authority and precision. Even during the most testing of action scenes, such as the maritime mayhem of Master and Commander, the sub remains composed and in control at all times.
Wharfedale has managed to piece together a beautifully balanced and extremely accomplished speaker package. The 9.1AV is an electrifying system, offering superb value for money.
