Still a capable machine, but some cheaper dedicated players offer superior performance

I have both a 60gb Ps3 with recent updating for new firmware updates and a Panasonic Blu ray BD-35. I can say hands down the panasonic trumps the ps3. Dvd playback was horrible on the ps3 especially at 1080p. On the panasonic its much much better with little noise,of course it largely depends on what disc your playing as some dvd's are poor anyway. Blu ray playback is also better on the panny with less noise and a smoother picture. I think it's the noise that lets the ps3 down..i don't bother using it anymore for dvd or BD playback just games. The people who keep championing it are the ones usually who have neve seen a superior player working. The ps3 i agree is still a good purchase but if dvd and blu ray are your priority i'd go for a good stanalone player anyday.

I own a PS3 40GB and decided to make some comparisons.

Now just to set it straight I use an older Hitachi 32" panel which is only 720p native, so not the latest by any means.

The comparison that I am making at this point is only for DVD playback. The PS3 is connected via HDMI directly to the panel.

So I put in Meet Joe Black and straight away I notice the poor quality. To sum it up quickly, it almost seemed like I was watching a poor quality AVI file stretched to full screen. The noise in the picture was just horrendous.

I certainly had not remembered the quality being that bad on my old Panasonic DVD player that was connected via component.

As I had taken away my Panasonic so could not easily do a side by side, I decided to do a side by side with my MacBook Pro outputting to the panel viz Mini Display port to VGA converter and a 5 meter (!) VGA cable. Instantly the noise was almost completely eliminated and the definition was far better.

I tweaked some of the settings on the PS3 hoping things would improve but no luck.

Blu-ray performance was much better as to be expected, however I completely agree with the noise claims, certainly not as much noise as with DVD playback. However as I do not have another blu-ray player to compare to - I cannot say if it is better or worse.

However it has made me consider the purchase of either a Pioneer or Yamaha BD Player.

I bought yesterday the blu-ray special issue and I have questions on the PS3 review.

You say that up-scaling DVDs is not as good as other players. What if you let the Receiver do this job and you have a good up-scaling receiver?

Also would all these issues like the sound quality and the image be improvable in a future firmware or is it restricted to hardware capabilities.

I am not into Games much and I was about to get a PS3 for my Blu ray, DVD and CD playback and also benefit from the wireless streaming from the PC and maybe play the occasional game, but your review put me off, especially when I can have the Sony standalone player for cheaper, or the Panasonic for the same money.

I'm told there's a firmware upgrade available now to make it Profile 2.0.

Thanks for the info, one other question is the PS3 BD 1.1 ready or is it awaiting a firmware update?

I must agree that I cannot notice much noise when watching Blu-Ray discs on the PS3 but then I don't have a raft of other players to compare it with. It's realy quite simple that if you like your games then this is the best option for Blu-Ray.

Know what, I have a PS3, and have had it now for 8 months. The Blu Ray performance via a Chord Silver Plus HDMI routed via an Onkyo 705SE into a Samsung PS50Q97 Plasma, is amazing! Absolutely no noise at all! Pin sharp, detailed and three dimensional!

Why was this splayer the dogs b-----ks when it was released, has been inmproved now via multiple hard and software updates, and yet all of a sudden is 'noisy'?  Well it's not.

It looks fantastic, and sounds amazing too, even though DTS HDMA and Dolby TrueHD are decoded in the player and passed via LPCM to the Onkyo. I have a Toshiba HDDVD that passes these formats undecoded into the Onkyo, and they too sound amazing, just like the PS3. The picture is great too, and the PS3 is if anything better.

I highly rate and recommend this player, and can't understand why What Hi Fi is clearl and withough justi****ation turning against it in favour of newer players.

Mmmmmmm?

In real terms how much better is the Pana BD35's Bluray performance compared to the PS3? also how noisy is the PS3 when playing Bluray discs?

DVD, Blu-ray, games, internet... this is truly a one box HD wonder!  Arguably the main factor influencing the outcome of the HD format war.

And it can all be had with a bundle of extras for around £300.  It updates it's own firmware, which is excellent once you can hook it up to the internet (I had real issues connecting my Orange box, but google it and you will find plenty of help).  At the moment, i feel that this is the most logical choice when taking a leap into the bluray world.
