A solid, feature-heavy set, but it's no longer the only convincing way to receive Freesat

  • For

Terrific colour reproduction with all sources; decent sound; impressive Freesat and DVD pictures

  • Against

Could do with slightly greater depth and vibrancy; Humax's stand-alone Freesat receiver

Panasonic is pushing its Freesat-toting models hard, and this 32in model is the latest in a fine flatscreen line-up.

Freesat performance is very good. Test it with BBC HD's Strictly Come Dancing, and the 'LZD81 digs up all the sparkle in the dancers' outfits, while tracking the fast action with excellent grip.

Standard-definition TV has less wow factor, but the picture is better than that from the onboard Freeview tuner.

DVD is perhaps this TV's strongest point. Fed Tropic Thunder, it reproduces images with excellent detail and edge definition. Colours are natural, whether displaying skin tones or lush jungle, and motion handling is among the best in class.

Superb performance with standard definition
Blacks aren't as deep as those on Sony's KDL-32W4000, nor whites as punchy, but the overall poise and clarity of the picture makes the Panasonic a standard-definition stunner.

With Blu-ray, the Panasonic is accomplished when it comes to colour reproduction and 24fps motion, but the contrast is slightly weaker and it doesn't dig-up the last smidge of detail of the Sony.

In previous reviews of Panasonic Freesat TVs, this is where we've said, "this is a solid set and a great option for anyone interested in Freesat".

That remains true, but there is now another option. For about the same money, you could pick up one of Panasonic's other 32inchers, and the Humax Freesat PVR box, which is slightly sharper and boasts recording functionality.
