Acoustic Energy Aego T
The Aego T system got the judge’s nod in its price range in 2006, taking home a Product of the Year gong, but it's far from dated. The satellites manage to blend tried-and-tested speaker technology with a hint of attractive style and an attractive piano black finish, and the package delivers in terms of build, looks, and performance.
The closed-box subwoofer is less impressive: it’s solid enough, just a little bit bulky to match the rest of the act. It makes sense in technical terms, however, with opposed 20cm drivers powered by a 200w amplifier.
Award-winners don’t shed quality overnight, nor even over the course of an AV year, and this is one heck of a listenable set-up, which proves itself highly adept at drawing you into the action. The overall presentation is one of unity and almost seamless integration, with no jagged edges leaping out to annoy you.
Voices and dialogue are well realised, and the three identical speakers across the front present the kind of unified array that’s important in multichannel presentation with the superb 300 disc.
Impressive for the money
This integration is carried on into the merging of the bass output of the subwoofer and the midrange from the satellites. It might not be as good as the best, but it’s very impressive for the money, and manages to avoid sounding like the subwoofer is in the next room.
The downsides? This system could be more musical and rivals time better, too, so you won’t be tapping your toe as merrily as you might.
As a result, this classy system musters only four stars.
